I have never played a DMC game although they are seemingly universally loved. I have heard from some people that they are quite difficult too. If you have played all of them, would you have a recommendation for novice players to have a look?

Yeah, these games are quite difficult, especially the first and third installments. I recommend you start with 3 because it is a prequel. If you start with 4 or 5, which are the easiest ones, you will miss many essential stuff about the series' lore.
