In a study conducted by the University of Exeter over a decade with more than 25,000 participants aged 40 and over, engaging in the music throughout your life is associated with better brain health in older age. Scientists working on PROTECT, an online study open to people aged 40 and over, examined data from more than a thousand adults over the age of 40 to see the impact of playing a musical instrument or singing in a choir on brain health.

The study shows that playing a musical instrument, especially the piano, is linked to improved memory and the ability to solve complex tasks, known as executive function. In addition, the study reveals the positive effects of being interested in music on brain health, which also increases when individuals continue to play instruments at later ages. The study also found that singing in a choir is positively associated with better brain health. Additionally, researchers suggest that the social aspects of being part of a band may also contribute to these benefits.

University of Exeter Dementia Research Professor Anne Corbett said the following about the research:

“A number of studies have looked at the effect of music on brain health. Our PROTECT study has given us a unique opportunity to explore the relationship between cognitive performance and music in a large cohort of older adults. Overall, we think that being musical could be a way of harnessing the brain’s agility and resilience, known as cognitive reserve.”
“Although more research is needed to investigate this relationship, our findings indicate that promoting musical education would be a valuable part of public health initiatives to promote a protective lifestyle for brain health, as would encouraging older adults to return to music in later life. There is considerable evidence for the benefit of music group activities for individuals with dementia, and this approach could be extended as part of a healthy ageing package for older adults to enable them to proactively reduce their risk and to promote brain health.”

"Being musical could be a way of harnessing the brain’s agility and resilience" I completely agree with what Anne Corbett said. If you have time, I recommend you take a look at the entire study.

I firmly believe that being interested in music will have positive effects on brain health, and I even believe that it has positive effects not only on brain health but also on human health and mental health in many ways. Just as playing a musical instrument and singing can have health benefits, I believe even listening to music has health benefits. For example, listening to music is very good for me when I am upset, tired, or stressed. I can never deny the healing aspect of music.

Question of the Day : Do you agree that engaging in music has positive effects on brain health? So why?

I am not sure because I don't play any instruments. I do listen to music and I think it's good.

ign @olaf.gui

I agree. I don't know the science but it seems intuitive. Music can help people calm themselves down, hype them up, etc.

Congratulations @vaynard86! Count me in for another round, please! Thank you so very much!

Of course I belive that working and playing with music, either playing instruments, singing, or simply listening to music, have a very beneficial effect on the brain, which can very definitely be seen later in life. I would say it is because doing so activates multiple areas of the brain in a regular manner, that has the effect of creating whole-brain coherence, which over time allows the brain to function more effectively and efficiently. 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙
