Dr. Blights' Lamp

Fan Art is more Fun in Splinterlands!

Here is an entry of mine for the current Splinterlands Arts Contest. It's a 3D version of Dr. Blights' Lamp. I have two types of images, a "partly" animated (gif) version and a still version.

I used a realistic texture on my lamp so it looks different from the reference I used. Although, I tried my best to follow its shape.

I am not an artist but the talented participants of the contest are challenging me to develop my artistic side. 🙂 Their splendid works are my inspiration.

My Process Flow

My process flow generally starts from modeling and then to shading. After that, I would then setup my scene. During the process, I may add more objects (modeling) to my scene or tweak one or more textures as I see fit. :)

Modeling the Lamp

The lamp will be the main focus of my would be scene.

I setup my window with my reference on the left side - this way, I can see it while I create my 3D version of it.

setup.png

The Fount/Base of the Lamp.

I started with a circle and then extrude it up to the z-axis. I added necessary loop cuts and then scale it to match the shape of the base. I repeat this process until I am satisfied with the results.

lamp base.png

Here is my final model for the base or fount as seen from the top.

lamp base - final.png

The Ring.

I don't know what this part is called to I will just refer to it as the ring.
I duplicated vertices from the base of the lamp I modeled and then extrude it to the z-axis. I added more geometry and then push the center faces inside to make a ring/belt.

ring.png

The Globe.

I duplicated a group of vertices on the top part of the ring. I then extruded it to the z-axis to an approximate height. I added few loop cuts and then positioned and scaled them to approximate the look of my reference.

glass part.png

The Ventilator.

I did the same process here. I duplicated a group of vertices from the globe and then scale it to the z-axis. Added few loop cuts and then shape it to make a ventilator.

lamp top.png

Here's how it look after.

lamp top - final.png

The indentation on the side is intended to hold the hood of the lamp.

The Hood.

From the indentation of the ventilator, I duplicated that ring of faces and then extrude and scale it along the normals.

Since all of the parts of my lamp has a subsurf modifier attached, I needed to add necessary geometry on the sides of the hood. Then I made the outer edge a little bit thinner.

lamp - anti glare.png

The Handle.

I made the handle next by duplicating the insides of the slot on the ventilator. I extruded it multiple times to make a handle.

Again, since it has a subsurf modifier attached, I placed some geometry around the edges for it to look more like a handle.

handle.png

The Knob.

The last part of the lamp that I modeled.
I started with a cylinder, rotated along the y-axis and then scaled down. I made a few insets and extrusions to make a bolt like object. This will be the knob.

knob.png

The Completed Model.

Below is the completed model of my lamp with all the parts combined together.

lamp final.png

Here is what it looks with a damaged metal texture.

The Flame

For the flame, I used Blenders' built-in fire simulator. This the part that took me the longest time to tweak and adjust.

flame.png

I added a subsurfed cube as the source of fire. I hid the globe as I worked on the flame.

The Scene

The Ground and the Trees

After positioning my camera, I added in trees and the ground. I created a tree starting from a circle by extruding it up. I made it leafless to portray a dying or dead tree.

The ground is just a subdivided plane. I moved a few vertices to make the main bumps. I used a displace modifier to create the smaller bumps.

ground.png

The Pedestal

I needed something to place the lamp to stand. I was going for a brick and then decided to make a stone instead.

I was shaping the brick into stone when a protruding portion of it looked like a nose. I can't helped myself putting eyes on, the legs, the tail and the beard on the stone. 😂

I had to pull myself out from adding more detail as I might forget my initial goal. 😅

So I decided to make a stone or petrified monster as a base for my lamp. 🙂

I used a rock texture to make it more like a rock.

lamp pedestal.png

I also added a moon on back to make the impression that its night.

The Plants

After adding in the trees and the moon, the scene still looks empty.

A few plants on the ground may do the job.

I decided on a pineapple like plant.

I started with a plane which I extrude and cut multiple times. I bend it afterwards just like the leaves of a pineapple.

After that, I duplicated it a few times and placed it in a circle. I made some adjustments on the duplicates so that they will not be an obvious duplicates.

plant 1.png

I textured the plants with a gradient green color. I used a particle system to scatter or plant the plants on the ground.

plant 2.png

There it is. That's my scene. 🙂

The render results are on the top of my post.

I didn't detail much how I model the other objects and how I setup my scene as my post is getting long.

Thank you for taking the time to read my long post.

Hope you like what you find.

Have a great day!

The people doing V2K with remote neural monitoring want me to believe this lady @battleaxe is an operator. She is involved deeply with her group and @fyrstikken . Her discord is Battleaxe#1003. I cant prove she is the one directly doing the V2K and RNM. Doing it requires more than one person at the least. It cant be done alone. She cant prove she is not one of the ones doing it. I was drugged in my home covertly, it ended badly. They have tried to kill me and are still trying to kill me. I bet nobody does anything at all. Ask @battleaxe to prove it. I bet she wont. They want me to believe the V2K and RNM in me is being broadcast from her location. And what the fuck is "HOMELAND SECURITY" doing about this shit? I think stumbling over their own dicks maybe? Just like they did and are doing with the Havana Syndrome.

They are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 years.

What would you say while having a gun pointed at your head from an undisclosed location? Have people find it? My hands are tied while they play like children with a gun to my head. Its a terrorist act on American soil while some yawn and say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth? https://ecency.com/fyrstikken/@fairandbalanced/i-am-the-only-motherfucker-on-the-internet-pointing-to-a-direct-source-for-voice-to-skull-electronic-terrorism

Another great job!!!
I have never worked with the fire simulator,
because it takes me too much time 😃
I rarely work with fire,
but until now I had only worked with fire shaders.

Here 2 free shaders if you are interested 👍

Thanks for appreciating my work.

I love playing with fire. It just took me hours just tweaking its settings to the point that I almost give up. 😅

Btw, I'm currently focused on hard surface modeling. I will try to move on next to character modeling when I have the time and opportunity.

Have a slice of !PIZZA.
