Zombie Death: Most Meta Resistant Deck?
As we continue through the daily play to earn market, winning often with the highest level cards gives the greatest value. The last thing you would want is to put a ton of money into a current meta deck to see it fall off from card changes or meta changes where it is unplayable. Thinking about this, I tried to imagine a deck that is resistant to large swings in effectiveness. That is when I settled on Zombie Death. The go to cards for this deck are not in fear of being changed and the relative strategy is tough to counter for all decks if the win condition comes up right. We will examine the strategy below as well as the few key cards that are needed for this deck to succeed. Win rate has been hovering around 50% for this deck on GU decks for some time and I believe has some great staying power.
Win Condition Strategy
Zombie Death wears down your opponent with a board full of zombies that pick off your enemy while also leeching health. This deck is not aggro in nature and tends to do better in the mid game. By turn three or four, the goal is to have at least a few buffed zombies on the board taking out your opponent's monsters and slowly widdling down your opponent's god health. Damage to the death god is often a good thing as several death cards pair well with this type of damage such as the flamecaller and fickle cambion. Overall, the more zombies on the board the better as they take care of your opponent's monsters as well as offer sacrifices to be buffed for cards such as monsterize. We have spoke about a few cards here but let us look at the top three cards for Zombie Death in order to run this strategy.
Necroscepter
The most annoying relic in the game in my opinion and the most important card for the zombie death deck. This relic summons one zombie to the board at the end of every turn and gives +1/+1 if you are frenzied. You also take away 2 favor from your opponent after a zombie enters your void. The double benefit here of minions for your team as well as basically eliminating the sanctum for your opponent is a great combo. It is quite easy to get frenzied with god power as well making it almost always a viable 2/2 zombie on the board.
Cursed Obelisk
A backline card that summons a zombie at the end of every turn and another if you are frenzied. AOE cards are the only thing that can wipe out this card often given you can get so wide early on with the obelisk and necroscepter. The four health make it tough to be taken down even with that approach however and really snowballs getting your board wide.
Netherswarm Lord
To complete the trio of cards in our review, we have the lord of darkness as I like to call him. This card gives +1/+1 to each friendly nether and draws a card if you are frenzied. A whole board of nether zombies buffed to 2/2 as well as one that is 3/3 with leech is really tough to deal with and even if you do, you are only healing the death god. The lord himself also gets buffed to a 4/6 at the end of the first turn making it a big swing to go after your opponent's god.
As you can see, there is alot you need to deal with zombie death as a counter. Aggro strategies can win against zombie if you do not pull the obelisk or necroscepter quickly as well as ramp magic dealing a bunch of spell damage and AOE damage to the opponent's board which does not trigger the leech. There are a things that have to go right for you and go wrong for zombie death for you to have a great chance of winning in my opinion. This is why I believe zombie death has staying power as a usable deck even in the highest leagues and making it a great long term buying opportunity. Personally, zombie death is where I am putting my money with one more necroscepter on my list to complete it to be competitive. Please upvote or comment if you have any other deck themes that may prove to be the best long term investment.
I think Midrange Nature will always be the most meta-resistant; you can make it more Aggro or Mid very easily to adapt to the meta.
Deception is just so good against Zombies. Counterfeit your Scepter, Bound By Her Will to steal your Obelisk, and you're done. Zombies only came back from the dead (haha) in the last couple of weeks because Deception has stopped being the meta for some reason.
Very good points there. Nature has seen such a deep drop off of late that it did not come on my radar. Will have to look deeper into it. Thank you for the commment!
Control deception counters zombies hard, but hidden rush deception has a rough time after the zombies start swarming.
I haven't tried any deck in the arena other than War. After reading this blog of yours I think I am going to try and build a Death deck.
