Are video games bad for children and adolescents? [Personal Opinon] ESP/ENG

Hello, how are you? Today I'd like to share with you a reflection that arose some time ago after a family debate when a family friend suggested to my cousin that they not let her son play video games because they encouraged violence and isolation in young people and children. A quick internet search will reveal mixed opinions on the matter. Some believe that video games are just a waste of time and are very harmful to people's physical and mental health, while others believe they could help you acquire mental dexterity.

Hoy me gustaría compartir contigo una reflexión que surgió hace algún tiempo tras un debate familiar cuando una amiga de la familia le sugirió a mi prima no dejar a su hijo usar videojuegos porque estos fomentaban la violencia y el aislamiento en los jóvenes y niños. Si haces una búsqueda rápida en internet te conseguirás con opiniones divididas al respecto, algunos opinan que los videojuegos solo sirven para perder el tiempo, que son muy perjudiciales para la salud física y mental de las personas, otros en cambio piensan que podrían ayudarte a adquirir destreza mental.
However, in my very personal opinion, and also based on what I learned at university about child psychology and pedagogy, I can say that the issue of video games is very relative, just like the environment in which a person is raised. That is to say, they are not inherently harmful; they can be influential but not determining. For example, if a child or adolescent spends a lot of time locked in their room playing violent video games like Outlast or GTA, just to give an example, they could have a certain tendency towards violence. However, there is something very important to take into account because this analysis raises a very important question: Would it be the fault of the video games or the parents? Remember that video games are like movies; they all have a very specific age rating. Maybe you might think that there are some very absurd video games that only serve to encourage violence, but evidently they were designed with the objective of entertaining an audience that is supposed to have formed criteria and know how to discern between what is right and what is wrong, that knows how to differentiate between reality and fantasy, that is, adults with a normal intellectual capacity.
Sin embargo en mi opinión muy personal y basándome también en lo que aprendí en la universidad sobre psicología infantil y pedagogía puedo decir que el tema de los videojuegos es muy relativo, tal como lo es el propio ambiente en el que se crie una persona, es decir no son inherentemente perjudiciales, pueden ser influyentes más no determinantes, por ejemplo si un niño o un adolescente pasa mucho tiempo encerrado en su habitación jugando videojuegos violentos como Outlast o GTA, tan solo por poner un ejemplo, podría tener cierta tendencia a la violencia pero, hay algo muy importante a tomar en cuenta porque de este análisis surge una pregunta muy importante ¿La culpa sería de los videojuegos o de los padres? Recuerda que los videojuegos son como las películas, todos tienen una clasificación muy específica para cada edad, tal vez podrías pensar que hay videojuegos muy absurdos que solo sirven para fomentar la violencia, pero evidentemente fueron diseñados con el objetivo de entretener a un público que se supone tiene un criterio formado y que sabe discernir entre lo que está bien y lo que está mal, que sabe diferenciar entre realidad y fantasía, es decir, adultos con una capacidad intelectual normal.
In this sense, it is obvious that parents are the ones who must set limits for their children to supervise what they do. On the other hand, saying that video games are harmful would be a generalization and therefore terribly unfair, because it is also scientifically proven that depending on the video game you use, you could improve cognitive skills such as memory, it would give you agility for problem solving, it fosters creativity, it even helps develop reflexes, including fine motor skills (fingers and hands) and increase eye-hand coordination. So it is just a matter of supervising and establishing a balance between this type of fun and activities that can be done outdoors so that the child or adolescent can also socialize in a real and not virtual environment. Not to mention that if they are really good at what they do and are passionate about it, in the future they could be a professional gamer and generate income with something that makes them happy, or they could be a programmer. Who knows?
En este sentido resulta obvio que son los padres quienes deben establecer límites en los hijos para supervisar lo que hacen. Por otra parte decir que los videojuegos son perjudiciales sería generalizar y por lo tanto es terriblemente injusto, porque también está científicamente comprobado que dependiendo del videojuego que uses podrías mejorar las habilidades cognitivas como la memoria, te daría agilidad para la resolución de problemas, fomenta la creatividad, incluso también ayuda a desarrollar los reflejos, incluyendo la motricidad fina (dedos y manos) y a incrementar la coordinación ojo-mano, así que solo es cuestión de supervisar y establecer un equilibrio entre este tipo de diversión y las actividades que se pueden hacer al aire libre para que el niño o el adolescente también pueda socializar en un entorno real y no virtual, sin mencionar además que si es realmente bueno en lo que hace y le apasiona, en el futuro podría ser un jugador profesional y generar ingresos con algo que lo hace feliz, o podría ser un programador ¿Quién sabe?.

This topic brings a lot of mixed feelings especially since it has to do with kids and adolescents. For, I think it's a mixture of both that could help. When playing a little game, I mixed it up with a bit of outdoor activities to help with social skills as well.
Exactly, you have to know how to balance both activities.
That's the tricky part.
What no one ever seems to address with this kind of question is the fact that not all video games are remotely the same. No one would ever think to ask whether "movies" (as a broad category that includes both Bambi and Saw III) are good or bad for kids. The psychology of someone who plays a lot of Candy Crush Saga is very different from that of someone who plays a lot of Battlefield, and both are very different from someone who plays a lot of Final Fantasy XIV or Super Mario World.
Obviously, not all video games or movies are the same. There's something for everyone, and obviously for everyone of all ages. The important thing here is that the person has a formed opinion.

Como bien dices, es muy relativo, creo que hoy en día estaríamos rodeados de muchas personas inadaptadas y violentas en nuestro entorno, ya qu venimos de esa generación que hizo grande a este tipo de video juegos. Siempre he opinado qu todo viene de la familia, la educación, y quizás algunos trastornos, pero no creo que los video juegos... ¡Buena reflexión!...

Estoy totalmente de acuerdo contigo. Los videojuegos en sí no son malos cuando tienes la suficiente capacidad para diferenciar entre lo bueno y lo malo. Es cierto que existen juegos que pueden ser muy violentos, pero lógicamente no permitirías que tu niño o adolescente juegue eso cuando apenas y esta desarrollando su propia personalidad. Recuerdo que cuando yo era pequeña mi papá me compro un juego que me parecía, y que todavía me sigue pareciendo, de lo mas divertido. Era un juego donde te enseñaba todos los huesos del cuerpo humano, básicamente era un juego de aprendizaje del cuerpo humano y el nombre de cada parte, tenia una estética muy cute y una música linda, todavía lo recuerdo con cariño. Pero en fin, mi punto es que así como hay juegos violentos hay juegos de aprendizaje, es cuestión de supervisar al niño cuando juegue al videojuego.

No pudiste haberlo dicho mejor, hay varios tipos de videojuegos, algunos muy educativos y productivos que te ayudan un montón, otros realmente son violentos y sanguinarios pero no son precisamente para menores de edad, es cuestión de analizar y establecer límites. I believe that video games can be harmful if you become addicted and neglect your responsibilities, whether you are a kid or an adult. Regarding the violence they can generate in the real world, I think it is something absurd, for example, millions of people play the GTA saga and you don't see them committing crimes in real life and the same could be said about Mortal Kombat.
