Community Engagement Challenge: Ruleset Riddles - Cleansing The Heat From Global Warming

Hi all, good day to all of you. It's time again for Community Engagement Challenge. Today's topic is on Ruleset Riddles where we look at a ruleset that gave me trouble and how I manage to adapt to it and overcome it. And the ruleset that I will be talking about today will be Global Warming.

Global Warming
This ruleset is a new ruleset that was added in early September. When I first saw it, I was like, oh my, everyone in burning status. That is total madness because any card that is really low in health will effectively be burned in round 2. Just when we thought that noxious fumes is an irritating ruleset, we have another one that is equally crazy.

So here's what Global Warming is:

• All units have the Burning status effect applied at the start of combat.
• Burning is the status effect, and Incendiary is the ability. Burning can be cleansed.

This burning ability is seen on Kha'zi Conjurer which is a negative ability given to a card where its stats is way stronger than what it is supposed to be. And now with the whole lineup having this, it becomes a new headache for us. And the ruleset did gave us a clue on using cleanse, so let's see how we are able to outlast sufficiently in the matchup.

Ruleset: Blood and Sunder, Global Warming

Selection Analysis
So now, the goal here is to overcome the global warming, so splinter selection is important, especially in Frontier format where the card pool is way more limited. There are 4 splinters available but for me, the choice is clear, it has to be earth splinter, because I will need the Time Bandit. Now let us look at the lineup in detail.

Now for my lineup, I went with Aurelia, foundation earth archon which gives +1 health to lineup. Health is very important in this ruleset, so every bit of extra health is important. next will be the tank and for me, it will be Dread Tarafian which has heal and in matches like this, heal is very important so that we can last longer while opponents are being damaged by the flames. The next card is a reach card which can strike opponent from position 2, Mad Gearhead. And next up will be Vicious Quilliun which is an opportunity card that can take out those that are low on health, which can either take them or let the flames burn them. Kicking Roc is the next which strikes for 3 damage on range which is very good because it can really hit hard and make cards fall into the burnt limit and being burned easily. Last but not least, Time Bandit with the cleanse that can remove burning.

My opponent used a lineup that is essentially like a mirror to mine but with 2 card different. Opponent prepared a Spellmonger for me to get smash by thorns and Giam Root to boost the health stat for his whole lineup. When it is seemingly like a mirror match, the selection and difference between will determine the winner.

So let's move on to the match itself and see how things progress during the rounds.

Round by Round Synopsis

Round 1 - A little irritated that I had to take 2 attacks to kill of Spellmonger and enduring 2 thorns returned damage. Thankfully both cards managed to survive. And with the Cleanse, both Dread Tarafian are now on non burned status.

Round 2 - A key moment happened here, whereby my tank went really low in health by when it reach its turned, it survived and heal back some health and take out opponent tank. Now my opponent will not have something that can heal and sustain but I have so now, it is the battle of who can outlast one another.

Round 3 - The effects of the burning starting to take toll on both lineups as cards start to fall and now we are left with a real small bunch of cards with my Dread Tarafian the key to surviving and hanging on to the burning flames with various cards all falling apart.

Round 4-6 - As the flames continue to burn, opponent's Time Bandit even when cleansed, was not able to hold up against a regenerating Dread Tarafian and finally bow down and Giam Root which had so much health also couldn't do much because of the ongoing burning effect it carried. A good win!

Post Match Discussion
To be honest, this ruleset really caught me off guard when it was released and I was struggling a little whenever I see this and more often than not, I see my whole lineup perish in flames before being able to retaliate sufficiently. And with that I realized that Cleanse and Healing will be key to sustain sufficiently and retaliate when everyone else had their cards burned. Not an easy one and I believe there might be some other combo in normal modern format that can encompass both of this abilities to let us ace this ruleset better.
