Splinterlands Experiment : Renting for New Modern

To stay in touch with the Splinterlands Game I like to do a few experiments now and then to try out new features without having to tip too much money into the pit and buy up all the latest assets on offer. Recently I have been trying to have success Scraping Brawl Wins in the New Modern Frays and this fresh Ranked Season I've decided it would be a good time to do another experiment and see if I can have success renting some of the new Modern cards (Rebellion and Conclave Arcana) for the season to check out how the game is evolving and maybe score a few extra wins for my Guild in the process.

Normally I like to set myself a budget first but this time that's been hard because I have no idea what the rental market is like with these new cards and at first glance the rental market doesn't seem to be very liquid. So I've just focused on recording my costs and seeing if I can get some value out of my expenditure. I started out renting some SPS and I picked up a 100,000 SPS Delegation at 0.001 DEC per Day per SPS...for 7 days - That's 700 DEC and I'm expecting I'll need to extend that for another 7 days to cover the season. So, a total of 1400 DEC for SPS rental over the season and that's kicked me off with a x14.76 Boost starting at Silver III (Rating 1100) in Modern Ranked.

Next up I had a look at the Summoners (a.k.a. Archons) to fill out my battle lineups. I originally was looking at Silver Level summoners but the market was so thin (and expensive) I decided to wind it back to Bronze. That means I was looking at Level 1 Legendaries, Level 2 Rares and Level 3 Commons. These are the ones I eventually settled with :-

Then I went through each of the Splinters and tried to pick up a good number of monsters at the matching levels which weren't ridiculously priced (preferably under 100% APR). That was a bit tricky because the market is so thin and I didn't spend a lot of time trying to match up with the chosen Summoners. However, that's part of the learning process as I have no idea what works or is strong in the New Modern Meta. That said, this is the DEC I spent on each Splinter :-

SplinterDEC
Fire712.005
Water968.335
Earth823.395
Life1025.91
Death919.155
Dragon311.475
Neutral983.82

So on top of the 789.54 DEC I spent on Summoners, that brings my direct card rentals expense up to 6,533.635 DEC for the entire season. All up with the SPS delegation the amount I expect to spend on this experiment is going to be just under 8000 DEC. Not too bad, but I already realize that it's unlikely that I will earn anything like that back from rewards, but we will see.

If you're interested in my experiment, stay tuned as I'll do a mid season update and a final report once the season is completed. Of course if you have any tips for me on how to win some games in the New Modern Meta then I'm keen to hear from you too. Please comment below!

I'm certainly curious to see your updates on returns. I've never looked into rentals myself more because I feel like it would be time consuming to do so, especially not knowing which cards will work well together. I'm only slowly learning that through playing and seeing what my opponents are doing that works. I thought this was rather clever from someone who was spamming Lorkus, and I can see why:

How much time do you think it took you to do all the rentals?

I probably spent at least 30 minutes, likely longer. If I go again that time will drop because I'll be more familiar with the card sets to choose from.

I am interested.

Let's see how this goes.

You might want to try and rent only CA, that should make it way cheaper as for example tofu is quite expensive to rent

I like how carefully you track your spending that’s the key to success in any experience whether it’s in gaming or anything else.

Very cool, I would be interested in the results of your experiment at Bronze level. I did a similar experiment at Gold level last session. Here is my post from three days ago discussing the results: https://ecency.com/hive-13323/@seattlea/feasibility-analysis-of-renting-in

Thanks for sharing. I wasn't confident that I'd be able to turn a profit, but after reading your post then maybe I will. Cheers.

I am actually interested to see how you will do, as competition gets pretty tough after 3,400 rating and I wonder if you will be able to score more wins at lower levels and if SPS earnings would still be good.
