Play2Earn Shooter on Hive Blockchain. Nice One! Gameplay and Impressions of Crypto Shots

avatar

2 days ago, it was announced that Crypto Shots turned live on the Hive blockchain. They also have launched their own coin DOOM on Hive. So I decided to try. The experience was nice, the game is fun. Despite of slow connection at my place (25-30 Mbps only), there were no lags.

You can play it for free on play.crypto-shots.com

But if you want to earn crypto, you have to buy NFTs (weapons, skins, equipment) - hive.crypto-shots.com/marketplace.

My Gameplay, Level 2

This video shows how I was trying to complete level 2 for the first time. The purpose is to collect all weapons and kill all enemies within an allotted time.

I added a track from the Google Audio Library but you can also hear the original sounds of shots.

The gameplay was smooth except for I am not an experienced shooter player and I can't run dexterously along corridors as some do.

There was only one bug - a frozen trace of a laser shot.

Level 1 Gameplay

Level 1 and Level 2 look not the same and probably other levels will surprise us too. Soon, Level 3 will be launched, Levels 4, 5, 6 will follow in Q1, Q2 of 2023 according to Crypto Shots' Roadmap.

Below is my gameplay on level 1 (I didn't record the sound of shots, my fault), no lags, no bugs:

How to Control the Game

Easy even for ones like me who have never played DOOM 😃

image.psd(19).jpg

Play2Earn

If you want to play and earn crypto, you are supposed to buy the game NFTs which, luckily, aren't costly. For example, the Starter Pack is now available for 13 HIVE, including 1x Legendary Ammo, 1x Base Gun, 1x Rifle, 1x Shotgun, 1x common and 1x rare character. Buy and sell NFTs on Hive here: https://hive.crypto-shots.com/marketplace. More NFTs are available on atomichub.io.

Big Plans

image.psd(20).jpg

PVP, mobile browser support, and new $MARS token are planned for this year according to Crypto Shots' Roadmap.

Crypto Shots looks a serious undertaking with a potentially big future. It is worth considering whether to join it while it is still at an early stage to enjoy bonuses as early adopters.

You can find more details and ask questions to @cryptoshots.nft on https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@cryptoshots.nft/we-are-live.

Thanks for stopping by! Comments are welcome as always! 🙂

The track in the videos is Outside the Universe - Joel Cummins, Kris Myers, Andy Farag from Google Audio Library ("You are allowed to use this audio track in any videos, including those used for monetization").

The name is going to DOOM this game.

Crypto Shots is a terrible name and will only attract people wanting to abuse this game and dump the tokens they earn.

Did you ever play Marathon back in the day?

brave_yGXNiWpM9h.png

two guys made that game; Jason Jones and Alex Seropian. They made it back in 1994 for no money and it released on Mac.

It was the first multiplayer and first shooter game I ever played. You could do near-seamless 8-person LAN deathmatches and we had so much fun playing this game.

If the people who are making crypto shots want their game to succeed, they will play old classics which are clearly where they're getting inspiration and style from for their game now.

They will see that people want to do multiplayer deathmatch and don't mind if it looks like the Original Quake, Doom or Marathon and they will see that people DO NOT WANT to be forced to buy NFTs to be able to earn.

Litearlly, every single crypto game that forces you to buy crypto or NFTs (OR BOTH SOMETIMS) has failed or will fail. It's basically telling players: Hey, chump, you're exit liquidity.

It's like crypto fraud devs don't realize that we're all veteran gamers from Steam and Xbox and we're well-aware of dev tricks to make money off of us. It's called "Early Access" or "battle pass" and it's all a crock of shit.

Sorry - this triggers me because if I had actual tech skills, like these people do, I would make a game that wasn't braindead from the jump.

Thanks for this critical point of view which I missed in my post.

All these thoughts are not groundless.

The name is going to DOOM this game. -- when you need a name for a project, you always have to choose between informativeness and charm. For example, if you create a website about traveling to Thailand, you should choose between something like "travelthailand dot com" and "smilingelephant dot com". The 1st clearly messages people "I am about traveling in Thailand" while the second one is more appealing and easier to remember, more charismatic.

Crypto Shots is informative but not bright as a brand name in my opinion. Will it bring use to the project or more harm - we'll see.

every single crypto game that forces you to buy crypto or NFTs (OR BOTH SOMETIMS) has failed or will fail.

I understand what you are talking about. But as you said, not all of them failed. For example, Splinterlands - you can't earn crypto there without buying NFTs as I know.

Here, on Hive, supporting a new project has an additional meaning. The more projects will grow (try to grow) on this pasture, the better for the blockchain. Even if some of these projects die, activity and connections between people will make Hive stronger.

Did you ever play Marathon back in the day? -

Not really. I hope the devs of Crypto Shots will read your post and learn something useful for their project...

Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Thanks for the feedback, will elaborate more on my thoughts.

For now..

  • the name was voted on, we could rebrand if really an issue
  • we already offer free-to-play (first button in the landing page) and we already have in our plans to gift NFTs to players that do well, and tokens from a pool collected from fees to high-earners in the game.

@x-rain @cryptoshots.nft

to be clear, I think your style is on point and the music in x-rain's vids are also on point. I'm not clear on if he added that from the Google repo or not, but, if so, it's awesome either way.

I am just an angry, bitter, no-tech asshole on the internet. That's literally who I am, so don't take what I say too seriously. I am, however, a gamer and have been for a while. I think quake-clones are literally never going to go away and that's a good thing. If you can make a game like quake + marathon 2: durandal and make it multi-player, I will play the crap out of your game.

I think gameplay is always more important than economics and if you make a good quake-clone-lite FPS on blockchain and don't make the barrier to entry too high, you will find many, many more people like me eager to play and maybe even buy things from you.

2 cents. thaks for taking my criticisms in stride. i appreciate the dialogue.

asshole on the internet [..] I am, however, a gamer

That's why we value your opinion 🙂

We'll see you around then since PVP is in the making 😄

gameplay is always more important than economics

True, that's the ultimate goal. But it takes time.
It took us only 4 months to get our 1st alpha live (October -> February 22), so for me that was already a miracle. It took a LOT of hard work and at least we did not start selling with a promise of a game 3 years later, like other projects do.
We had/have to start from somewhere and try and get some funds to grow the team with more game devs.

Are you using an engine for this or is this all handcoded in something?

I honestly dig the level designs so far. The weapons looked appropriate too, don't like the monsters yet but I bet that's just a WIP for now.

Please, please, please, please. Go and play old quake, marathon, doom, shadow warrior and duke nukem :) :) A modern game that incorporated these old games is called Space Beast: Terrorfight and if you've never seen that before, I think your game + horror + p2e could be a real winner.

Horror games SELL and horror and FPS in multiplaye PVP is so cool and awesome. Imagine having Shodan's creepiness from System Shock 2 vibing through the atmosphere of a level in sparse lighting on a futuristic ship and you're trying to surivie against others. Wuold be sick.

engine

Unity engine

don't like the monsters yet

Yeh the idea was to move to walking enemies but requires more work with the rigging, animations and all. The first 3 levels for now have drones.

lightning

The 1st level initially was much darker and went live as is because of a bug and we kept it that way since then. May be worth fixing that bug because you're right, a darker atmosphere was cooler..

space_beast_crypt_shot_nft_comparison.jpg
this is spacebeast. I think the mechanic of using light, muzzle flash and explosions really adds to the atmosphere, makes your levels so much more claustrophobic and intense.

drones can be cool too, I'm sure with more rigging and animations the monsters will get cooler.

Here is a shot of Epidemic, a ps1 port in america from Japan. I always thought this UI was simple, but also too bulky :) I think for the game you're making, you want to have a clean and simple UI that also fulfills its aesthetic obligations.

epidemic-sony-playstation-1-ps1-psx-editorial-use-only-2C4KG4H.jpg

For instance, look at Space Beast above, do you want a HUD that fits within a helmet visor? It adds to a sense of immersion if done right. If done wrong, it just is frustrating for the player.

Have you seen the new Aliens game?

They FINALLY did claustrobia and that original Aliens movie feel some justice. It's worth a check too I think, even though it's very different.

OR you could go for a more Deep Rock Galactic vibe for the game an make it a co-op looter/shooter but set in a horror atmosphere of a space station (basically SpaceBeast but better).

screen_shot_2877.jpg

So many gamers want to play an actually fun and good FPS that is P2E. It's actually insanely untapped.

Not a single one has done it so far, which is insane to me.

Ever hear of $VIDYA? Please don't be like that shithouse crypto project and promise the world but never deliver.

Crypto Shots is a terrible name

The team voted on it 🙂

image.png

Personally I don't think it's bad.
The initials are the same as Counter Strike so it's easy to remember for gamers.
"Shots" in theory conveys that it's about shooting and "Crypto" immediately gives it away that it is a blockchain game. True, we issue tokens and not crypto as rewards, but "Tokens-and-NFTs Shots" (TANS) probably would have been even worse lol.

We could rebrand if it's really an issue, but so far we haven't received much of that feedback.

abuse this game and dump the tokens they earn.

From day zero we offered players the option to keep the rewards in the game to accrue some interest. And we even forced players to stake some with the stake-to-claim rule (every 1000 kills you need to have 80 igBOOM staked in order to be able to claim new rewards).
We have also been working hard on use cases for the BOOM token (and the DOOM/BOOM bridge is on the way this week).
There is a list of use cases in the whitepaper and we already have 3 smart contracts already on the testnet that only need to be integrated in the frontend (more staking options, blending, secret weapons - the last 2 burn tokens and NFTs).

people want to do multiplayer

PVP was always in our roadmap, we already started working on it (as per pics referenced in our posts) and we'll resume working on it shortly

people DO NOT WANT to be forced to buy NFTs to be able to earn

We already offer free-to-play and we already have in our plans to gift NFTs to players that do well, and tokens from a pool coming from fees charged to high-earners in the game.
As everything, it takes time to develop and until we can afford to expand our team we can only do our best to deliver as fast as we can.

At the same time, I personally have been putting a lot of money in to build this game. And most of the team since the bear market started have renounced to their pay (luckily most of us still had a day job, even though most of us were on the verge on going full time on CS). So my point here is that the game needs to become sustainable to reward players and at the same time at least pay salaries. It's not an easy task and most games don't manage to do it right. Also remember that (except for our initial sales) you're buying NFTs from other players, not from us.. and we only keep a small fee on the NFT trading. And clearly until the game becomes big that does not even pay the servers bills.

Hey, chump, you're exit liquidity

There were/are buy orders from a (token) investor of ours for a total of $ 105 k, so no we do not rely solely on new players paying for old players. As the game starts getting traction and the token with it, the ecosystem will become more balanced.

crypto fraud devs

How do you suggest we monetize our efforts and time? No one likes to work for free (or at least not for years).

if I had actual tech skills, like these people do, I would make a game that wasn't braindead from the jump

If you think you have the skills and qualifications required to help the game grow, you could propose yourself as Business Analyst, Tester or a similar role.
And if you know good Unity Devs that don't charge 2k a week, we can interview some.

✌️

Thank you for this detailed explanation. I have never looked from inside of a game, only from outside with the eyes of a player.

"Shots" in theory conveys that it's about shooting and "Crypto" immediately gives it away that it is a blockchain game. - this how it worked in my case. As soon as I read the name, I knew what to expect - a blockchain play2earn shooter.

PVP was always in our roadmap, we already started working on it -- CS may become a place to "meet" and get to know other Hivers which would be cool. I participated in HiveFest 2021 in a metaverse, it was great experience.

There were/are buy orders from a (token) investor of ours for a total of $ 105 k - this is awesome, investments can pay salaries one day when the token grows bigger.

Good to hear! 😎

place to "meet"

indeed!

HiveFest 2021

Yep I was there both years too, and this year in person (on stage 😱)

can pay salaries one day when the token grows bigger

That's right, we are counting on it 🤞

Not a bug 😅 (but you're not the first one to call it so)

If you shoot from some distance, those rays remain in the air killing anything that goes through them.

If you shoot from nearby though they appear like regular bullets.

😀 Then, this gun is a good one for the final battle near the spaceship.

That's actually expected too 😅

If you don't have the teleport NFT and at least one rare skin, your spawn points are randomized and one is even on the roof! It's the same in level-0.

In the latter we added instructions (for example this pic above) and you can enter from a window. We also made the outside prettier.

For level-1 we still need to add the instructions and make the outside prettier but you can jump down on the teleport ray to enter back into the rooms 😎
