Gods Unchained has a sort of real-world characters like Lightfoot Informant, Annoying Bureaucrat, Prison Escapee, etc, whereas some cards represent abstract notions like False Peace, Mutual Hatred, etc. All of this reminds me dystopian things happening in real life against the backdrop of freedom decline in the country I live, Russia, and in many other countries too. So when I started creating a custom card for a contest by @kephler, I decided to follow this idea. As a result, I have created a set of cards including:

  • Enemy Herald
  • Malevolent Crawler
  • Vladimir's Treat
  • Thimblerigger
  • Censorship
  • Magic Pipe
  • The Apotheosis of War

Hope you will like them.

Enemy Herald

Sometimes, mass media are created to be a weapon. State propaganda for the purposes of social destruction and war is alive and well.

The art: Portrait Of Jacob Wilson by an English artist William Thomas Roden.

Malevolent Crawler

State malevolent activity on the Web is a dark token of modern times.

Art: The Smiling Spider (1881) by French Odilon Redon.

Vladimir's Treat

47164035290459.png

Sometimes, people die. Sometimes, they die not for natural reasons. Nobody likes daring murders with the use of poisons.

The art: Boyar's Treat (1865) by Russian Schwarz.

Thimblerigger

47164034985738.png

Interference in the elections of other states, falsification of results in one's own country - this happened and happens in different countries.

The art: The Conjurer (1502) by Dutch Hieronymus Bosch.

Censorship

97164034833377.png

Freedom is in decline in many countries, unfreedom breeds unfree minds.

Art: The Egg (1885) by French Odilon Redon

Magic Pipe

I have played around with such a phenomenon as using energy/gas/oil as a tool of blackmailing and political bribery.

The art: A Shepherd Playing Flute (1897) painted by a Polish Siemiradzki.

The Apotheosis of War

44164035583456.png

Too many talks on the state TV channels about nuclear strikes last years.

Art: The Apotheosis of War (1871) by a Russian artist Vereshchagin.

Would Be Cool

Would be cool the team of GU created a dystopian NFT-game inspired by Nineteen Eighty-Four. We need a new dystopia, a new story and art, because real life with all new technologies of control and oppression has surpassed what was described by the authors of the 20th century.

The fight against totalitarian tendencies within countries and at the international level seems to be one of the main challenges of the 21st century therefore such a game and art can attract the attention of the media and the public not yet involved in the blockchain.

Great work - I may not know enough about Russian culture and history but I think the cards are pretty neat as a set. Thanks for your submission!

I love this post, the art and the wording (vey refined). "Freedom is in decline in many countries, unfreedom breeds unfree minds." hits me somewhere deep. Also, do you listen to IC3PEAK? My favorite song from them is Марш (Marching), close second Смерти Больше Нет (Death No More). I am not Russian, but I like listening to them.

Thank you! I never heard about IC3PEAK, probably because I haven't followed the news of music for ages. I have watched two videos of them (interesting songs) and I am curious how they are now. Because in 2021, the state imprisons for much less.

Redon's image is great, never seen it. Perfectly fits to the 'censorship' topic.

Yeah, considering the fact that, sooner or later, a spoon will emerge to eat the content of the head.

Thank you!
