Sitdown with Saturn Part 1
Territory Wrestling
As many of you in the #woonft community know, we had a Sitdown with Saturn live on our Discord. When asked about territory wrestling, Perry had this to say.
So John and I, when we started in the mid-south, we drove from Boston to Memphis. We got, tv was Saturday morning; we got there Friday afternoon. I talked to Lawler on the phone, who was the boss. And he told us there's a show in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and we should go check it out.
The John he refers to here is his former tag team partner John Kronus. The two held tag team gold in ECW and various other territories and were close friends. The Lawler he is referring to is the infamous Jerry "The King" Lawler, who was a significant player in the mid-south wrestling territory.
So me and John got to the show. The first thing we're stunned about is complete kayfabe. Heels are on one side of the building; baby faces are on the other side. They're never allowed to be together.
Those who don't know kayfabe is wrestling speak to keep the illusion alive and treat it as a genuine and authentic event. Heels and Babyfaces are also wrestling terms for the bad and good guys, respectively. Having heels and babyfaces separate keeps kayfabe with their audience, who can now suspend their disbelief and believe the two wrestlers hate each other.
So we're sitting there watching the show, and in about the third or fourth match, and one of the referees walked up to us, and he goes, which one of you guys is Perry? And I go, I am. He goes, hey, Eddie Gilbert's opponent didn't show up. He was wondering if you have your gear. Could you work with him tonight?
Eddie Gilbert was a professional wrestler and wrestling booker who worked for both the WWF and WCW, but is most famous for his legendary feud with Jerry Lawler, which involved an angle where Eddie Gilbert hit Jerry Lawler with his car, resulting in viewers calling the police station to report a hit and run.
I've never met Eddie or anything, but of course, I said, yes. Because you, number one, you always bring your gear to every show you go to, just in case. So, I don't know, Eddie. I'm wondering how the hell we're going to do this because I can't go talk to him. And then, right before our match, the referee comes back o me, and he goes, okay, Perry, we need to do a 45 minute Broadway, 45-minute time limit. He goes, and Eddie said, Please, just listen to him. So I said, okay, sure. So I got in the ring, introduced myself to Eddie the first time, and he walked me 45 minutes, easy as can be.
I don't know about you, but I think that is absolutely incredible. Never having met someone or talked anything out and being able to go for 45 minutes straight. Wow. Absolutely incredible.
