instantly it reminded me of a traditional bulgarian tale from a classic author in genre: The 3 brothers and the golden apple!
basically...their father was sending them 1 by 1 to fight a mythological 3 headed serpent/ dragon like creature...
my next (more logical) impression is of the biblical snake, which offered the forbidden fruit (apple) to Adam and Eva :)
and it is quite a subliminal message that you put a halo & horns at the same time on it's head
