Adapting to Modern: Getting to Know Your Rebellion Core Set Part 9
Prelude
A brand new week has started and welcome back to another new post on Adapting to Modern where I look at how I crossed over from playing in Wild Battles till today focusing and getting more cards on Modern Battles, sharing with the community the struggles, the strategies and things I do to move towards playing in Modern. With the wrapping up of the sharing and review of the Soul Bound Reward cards from Rebellion set and due to Rebellion will become the main set that anchor the modern fray when a new card set release into the modern group, there is still a need to have a good base of Rebellion core set cards to do well in battles. So within this series, I will embark on reviewing 2 cards per week from the Rebellion Core set to discuss if you should be considering getting some of the cards to adapt to modern gameplay when the new set comes and Chaos Legion phases out. At this moment, I am trying to accumulate as much DEC as I can so that I can start purchasing these cards from Rebellion core or purchase cards from the new set as it comes to us. So let's get on with it and look at the 2 cards that we will review today.
Rebellion Core Set Cards
Similar to the previous post for this series, we will begin discussing card from the Rebellion Core Set. Using a similar method when I reviewed the Soul Bound reward cards, I will be discussing about the growth of the cards and will give a simple review to whether or not investing into them will level up your game play or not. And let's continue our review and progressing into water splinter by looking at another 2 of the rare cards from the Rebellion core set. Summoners will be left all the way to the end of the whole series since by default we should gather as much of them as possible.
Sea Dog of Eight
The first water splinter rare card that we will reviewing today will be Sea Dog of Eight. For a start, somehow this card doesn't really look like what the name suggest be it sea or dog. Nevertheless, this card is an interesting one as its main goal is to shave off armour from opponent card. In a time when armour can be used as attack, this card probably can do some use as a front tank to prevent further strikes using armour. Personally at level 1-3, this card probably would not be able to hold a spot in my lineup considering the high mana cost associated with selecting it in the lineup but when it crosses into level 4, it is much more enticing as there is heal which will give this card much more sustainability and we do see strong scaling of attack, speed and health of this card. So probably this is a card that probably need more investment to a higher level one as compared to just obtaining a level 1 version of this card. Will be a good tank from level 4 onwards but so far Commander Slade is still my go to for tank.
Argarux Magus
The next card we will look at will be Argarux Magus. To be honest, when I first look at this card, I didn't fancy it as it didn't look impressive with the mediocre stats. But when I look deeper and realize that there is more than meets the eye because at level 4, similar to Sea Dog of Eight, this card comes alive with Blood Lust. With blood lust and being able to qualify for Little League, this card whenever kills something, it grows. Like the various Gladius cards, having a blood lust card that do not need to call upon Gladius summoner is something amazing and cannot be underestimated. When at level 4, it already have 4 health for a good sustain so it can take some damage before it grows. The only thing is that there is also a luck factor to consider for this, since it is scattershot. A potentially good card addition but requires a little more investment.
Assessment
2 rare cards that both require them to be at least level 4 for them to unleash their true full potential. Sea Dog of Eight gets heal to have a good sustain against attacks while Argarux Magus gains Blood Lust at level 4 to give it the potential to grow even bigger and meaner. At lower levels, this two card would have better alternatives with even cards from Soul Bound reward card can do better.
Rating wise for both the cards, I would say Sea Dog of Eight would probably score a rating of 3.6/5 provided it is a level 4 variant as it will be able to shave off armour and sustain itself with a high health base and healing. For Argarux Magus, for a level 4 variant should deserve a rating of 3.9/5. This card while having so much potential has a big luck factor which could cause it to not land its attack on a card that is low on health and hampen its blood lust growth and hence unable to give it a score above 4. Do not that both cards if below level 4 are not exactly good per day with plenty of alternate options to fill. Investment wise, I would say if you compete in higher leagues, do consider getting level 4 variants of them. Gonna be a little costly but both cards will be good viable options for your lineup/collection.
Wrap Up
I have started looking into the Rebellion core set cards that we need to start building up to prepare for the new set that will be coming in when Chaos Legion gets rotated out. I do hope that with the new set that will be launching soon, we can find back the vibrancy during the prime days where everyone was busy camping for cheap cards or scurrying through the rental market to get cheap rentals. Remember, if you are uncertain, there is training mode available for you to test these card out and try out how it can perform before purchasing or renting.
Let's continue to grow and find path in modern as we journey on playing Splinterlands.
See you next time!
