Do Plants Hear Us?

I had earlier assumed that only grandmas or old gardeners were allowed to talk to plants. You see that type of patty pattie, grows good, my little one, so meaningless and sweet to talk. However, one day as I sprinkled some water on a small plant on my desk, I heard myself say to the little plant, You are so good. It made me pause for a second. Would that, in some uncouth way, I know not, listen to me?

It sounds crazy, right? Plants have neither ears nor brain nor anything of our hearing apparatus. However, researchers have found out that plants act in response to sounds, but not words but sounds, vibrations. These fine impulses are transmitted to them as they receive them with their cells, specifically, the stems and leaves. In air, sound waves cause insignificant vibrations which are experienced by the plants. The vibrations can bring a change in them internally sometimes even to the growth or behavior.

As an example to show, it was discovered by scientists that some flowers like evening primroses produce more nectar when they are buzzed by a bee that is nearing their location. What this implies is that the plant somehow perceives the frequency of the wings of the bee and he instantly reacts to the signal. He is not hearing as a human being, but it is, of course, some sort of awareness. The plant knows that something is occurring in its environment and it adapts to take advantage of this. None of the magic that--none of that biology which is the most silent and the most beautiful.

Something stranger was illustrated in another research. When the sound of the running water was experienced, there were plants where the roots extended towards the direction of the running water. It was not necessary to see or touch it, people just heard it. Thinking--winkless, hearingless, plant which sniffs the running of water. Nature never stops being surprised.

Plants are not, however, good in everything. Like the people, they can also get stressed. Difficulty can be grown because of loud and brutal sounds like constant traffic, machines or constructions. It was noted that plants that are susceptible to the noise pollution have weaker roots or smaller leaves. This constant trembling may intervene in their path, of how increasingly annoyed people are by the constant noises.

So maybe that is the reason why green gardens and green houses are so soothing. It's not only for us. Then it is possible that the plants are relaxing too.

This is where, however, there is an added interest. Some gardeners and researches have tested plants by playing music. Light classical music, Mellow instrumentals and even human voices have been tried out. Most of the plants which were subjected to these sounds became taller, had green leaves or even bloomed sooner compared to the plants which were kept quiet. Their rate of growth was however low or interferent on occasions where the same plants were located near rock music or sound machines. As though they would like to like some type of energy.

Maybe that is why it is natural to discuss with them. A low pitch of voice creates an non-acid rhythm in which we are talking. Of sweet vibrations voice, breath, The tone--all these. And plants perhaps would be responding to that in their silent way.

In doing it it is also human. Making talk at plants is not merely sending sound waves, we are also dropping love there. We're paying attention. And the same attention gives them another treatment. We are very good to them, put them in the sun and we watch how they change in slightest ways. Before, perhaps it is not that they can hear us, but that our voice is what makes us pay more attention to them.

However, I would like to assume that my plants are familiar with me. That they feel something good as I mumble, You are growing so well, And they answer me in some muffled way. They must perhaps Outbreak a wee bit higher, open a leaf a wee bit wider Bloom a day or two before. It is not a fact, though it is enough to make me go on with the talk.

Nature is a secretive case. When we listen we start thinking that we have two ears or that we are able to speak. But maybe it is more of being linked- feeling the world with small indications and mute power. Playants can be stupid in our terms, but will be aware that there is life about them.

So the next time you have to go up to your plants, say something good to them. One will not have to fear sounding dumb. Science asserts that they could touch them. And still when they do not, what is more will be reminding you to get relax, to breathe and take your eyes open and see the little silent lives that are growing along with you.

It is probably what makes magic magic, whether you think plants can hear us or they cannot it is that the words, how we treat them, what we listen to must do something to us this day to make us a little better.
