The need for Opportunity Snipers like "Conclave Tracker" in Business & Leadership

I have failed in life several times and come to discover that those failures were not a result of poor preparation or poor skills, but rather due to missed opportunities. This has made me develop a great interest in studying strategies needed to seize opportunities. In my Splinterlands gaming journey, I do not joke with cards that have opportunity ability and endeavour, so I have them in all splinter types.

When learning about the 82 new cards and eleven brand-new abilities woven into Splinterlands' Conclave Arcana card set, I thought that the cards would not possess other abilities. However, I became so excited after opening two packs and buying stand-alone cards in the market, I discovered that some of the new cards possess the opportunity ability. So far, I have three of such cards in my Conclave Arcana deck.

The three cards with opportunity ability in my >Conclave Arcana deck are Ashen Cindergrim (4) - fire splinter, Water Divine (2) - water splinter and Conclave Tracker (8) - neutral splinter. Of the three, Conclave Tracker (8) stands out for me and becomes the focus of today's discourse.

Conclave Tracker - The Conclave's Sniper

Conclave Tracker emerges as a cunning neutral card, blending sharp instincts with strategic versatility. With its Opportunity ability to snipe low-health foes, Repair to boost allies, and eventual Phase to dodge magical threats, this 8-mana powerhouse thrives in high-stakes battles, uncovering Praetoria’s secrets with relentless precision. Beyond the battlefield, the Conclave Tracker’s lore and mechanics offer profound lessons for business and leadership, teaching us how to seize overlooked opportunities, fortify teams, and adapt to volatile challenges. Conclave Tracker’s tactical prowess in Splinterlands and the timeless strategies could help navigate the corporate jungle.

The lore further reveals Conclave Tracker as a scout and survivor, adept at finding hidden clues in harsh environments, tasked with uncovering Praetoria’s secrets. The strengths of this monster are:

  • Opportunity (at Level 1): This ability makes Conclave Tracker a sniper, ideal for picking off low-health enemies. With 3 Speed, it’s moderately fast, increasing the chance to strike before slower enemies, especially in rulesets like Equal Opportunity (where all monsters gain Opportunity) or Target Practice, which boosts snipe and opportunity attacks.

  • Repair (at Level 3): This ability adds durability to tanky allies by restoring armor each round. This synergizes well with high-armor monsters or those with abilities like Protect (adds armor to all allies). It is particularly effective in prolonged battles or rulesets like Armored Up where all monsters start with extra armor.

  • Phase (at Level 10): At max level, Phase makes Conclave Tracker highly resistant to magic-heavy teams, dodging half of incoming magic attacks. This is a game-changer in Magic Reflect or Holy Protection rulesets, where magic damage is prevalent.

  • Magic Attack: This feature makes this monster able to bypass armor, making it effective against tanky monsters with high armor but low health. Combined with Opportunity, it can target squishy backline monsters (such as healers or support units).

  • Neutral Splinter: This monster fits into any splinter, offering flexibility in deck-building across Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Death, or Dragon teams.

Best Strategy for Conclave Tracker's Use

As with other low-health Opportunity cards, Conclave Tracker is best positioned in the backline (positions 3-6) to protect its low health while leveraging Opportunity to snipe enemies. Front-line placement should be avoided unless paired with a strong tank and Repair targets.

This card should be used as a secondary damage dealer and support unit. Its magic attack and Opportunity make it a threat to low-health enemies, while Repair adds team sustainability. However, in Melee Mayhem or Super Sneak, Conclave Tracker should be protected by a tank or healer, as melee threats could target it. In Lost Magic, its magic attack would be disabled, making it less effective unless leveled up for the Repair utility.

You need Snipers in Business and Leadership too

We can identify the Conclave Tracker character as a sniper. Sniping here refers to the Opportunity ability, which allows a monster to target and attack the enemy monster with the lowest health on the opposing team, regardless of its position (except in specific rulesets like Fog of War). This mechanic mimics a sniper’s precision in picking off vulnerable targets, bypassing stronger frontline units to eliminate weaker ones, such as healers or support monsters, disrupting the opponent’s strategy.

In a business or leadership context, sniping metaphorically means identifying and capitalizing on specific, often overlooked opportunities or weaknesses in a competitive environment. For example, a business might "snipe" success by targeting an underserved market niche or addressing a competitor’s vulnerability, much like the Conclave Tracker zeroes in on the weakest enemy in battle.

The Opportunity ability of Conclave Tracker represents instinct over flashy skills. The Tracker relies on instincts, not magic, to find hidden clues in harsh environments.

Note that raw talent or flashy skills, such as advanced tech or credentials, are not always the key to success. Like the Tracker’s Opportunity ability, which targets the weakest link, successful leaders identify and exploit overlooked opportunities. This could be market gaps, inefficiencies, or underserved niches. For example, a startup might focus on a specific customer pain point that larger competitors ignore, much like the Tracker snipes low-health enemies.

As a leader, you must train your team to develop sharp instincts for spotting opportunities others miss. Encourage curiosity and adaptability, rewarding those who find creative solutions to problems.

Also, Conclave Tracker's the Repair ability represents sustainability through support. The Tracker scouts ahead but also supports the Conclave by uncovering paths and clues, ensuring the team’s progress. The Repair ability reflects the importance of maintaining and strengthening your team or organization. In business, this translates to investing in employee well-being, training, and infrastructure. Just as Repair restores armor to keep allies in the fight, leaders must repair “organizational armor” by addressing burnout, encouraging collaboration, and maintaining resources.

In leadership, Conclave Tracker represents a leader who reinforces your team’s resilience. This involves regularly checking in on team morale, providing resources for growth, and fixing small issues before they become major setbacks.

Conclave Tracker's Phase Ability represents Adaptability in high-stakes Environments. The Tracker survives Praetoria’s harshest landscapes—volcanoes, jungles, swamps—while pursuing a millennia-old secret. The Phase ability, which helps dodge magic attacks, symbolizes adaptability in unpredictable markets. Businesses face “magic attacks” like economic shifts, new regulations, or disruptive technologies. Leaders who anticipate and pivot—like adopting new tools or rethinking strategies—thrive in volatile conditions.

In leadership, Conclave Tracker represents a leader with a mindset of agility. Such should encourage the team to embrace change, experiment with new approaches, and learn from failures, just as the Tracker dodges threats to keep moving forward.

Conclusion

The Conclave Tracker is a strategic card that thrives in synergy-driven, high-mana battles, excelling in rulesets that amplify Opportunity and Repair. Its lore and abilities teach business leaders to leverage instincts, support their teams, adapt to challenges, and stay focused on long-term goals while questioning their purpose.

Like the Conclave Tracker, great leaders trust their instincts to spot hidden opportunities and create lasting impact by strengthening their teams and adapting to challenges.
