How to Amplify the Effectiveness of the "Thorns" Ability in Splinterlands Battle

When I started playing Splinterlands battle newly, monster units and summoners with thorns ability were my favourite due to their double-attack tendencies. The thorns ability of a monster provides that when an enemy hits the "thorns" monster with a Melee attack, the "thorns" monster does damage back to the attacker by half of its attack strength. It has an upper cap of 2 return attacks.

Of all the monster units with Thorns ability, Venari Knifer was my best. Every new player in SPlinterlands would have loved to use this monster unit. At the first level, Venari Knifer is rated 5 in estimated power and has the thorns ability.

I drew this battle with 12 manna cap and the Close range Battle ruleset. When this battle ruleset is active, ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles. The limited manna cap was just too small for me and I could not think of the best ranged attack monster units to use. I decided to go for melee monsters as long as I would combine it with Underboss Fabino which adds +2 melee attack to friendly monster units. I could only get two monster units to join and Venari Knifer (6) was one of them. The goal was just to be able to have the return attack if hit with a melee attack. For covering the manna cap, I selected Mycelic Morphoid (1) to join the battle.

The enemy summoner was billed to deplete my magic attack by -1 and health by -1. Thank God, I did not use any magic attack monster. Unfortunately, the health of my monster units were reduced by 1. I was left with a cumulative health of 7 against three monster units with a cumulative health of 5 and 2 armors. That was going to be a fierce battle for me.

Unknown to me having Underboss Fabino is just the best kind of summoner that should call thorns monsters to make their attack more effective. My summoner added +2 attack to both monster units but just one of the monsters utilized its attack.

Venari Knifer doled the first attack with its high speed of +4. and it was amazing to see it damage the enemy monster by -4. The monster was only lucky that it hit the armor. that sounded as a miss for me, wasting 4 melee attack on 1 armor.

When the enemy monster launched the first attack, it got a return damage from Venari Knifer and they got one monster down at the end of the first round.

By the second round, the next enemy monster that took the first position also self-destructed by receiving a return attack from Venari Knifer plus a -4 damage.

By the third round, the battle ended and my monster in the first position only lost -3 health. Venari Knifer did all the fight while Mycelic Morphoid (1) only observed. I won with just three attacks. The return attacks from the "thorns"-laden monster did the magic.

I discovered that the effectiveness of a melee attack monster with thorns ability is best harnessed when called by a summoner that enhances and increases its attack. Also, using a monster that gives a double attack to all friendly monsters or boosts melee attack is an advantage.

When next you decide to field a monster unit with "thorns ability", trying using a summoner like Underboss Fabino or any other that would increase the weight of your melee attack.
