Do Things You Can Sustain
I have this feeling sometime last year, but because of so many things that will change, I pushed the thought away from my head, but I knew it was the truth. I started something that was very hard to manage and I had the thought of streamlining it but many people around would not understand so I let it be but it resulted in confusion for everyone and we had to streamline to what is very clear and practical today.
Expansion is a beautiful thing. But when you expand unprepared, it may end up in a dip. Your growth can lead to your downfall. I have heard many preachers saying God will not give you what you are not prepared for because he is a God of perfection. That is 100% correct because if you make $100k when your mind can only handle $5k, you will make terrible mistakes.
Last year we saw a system (Luna) that failed because of the growth. Well, we can blame the algorithm used, but the algorithm failed because it could not handle the success and the increase of users.
I was working on an algorithm and metric for the token economy of a mining platform and I simply used a similar reward system on the Hive blockchain as it has been sustainable for years. Then I set the value for any growth to when we see the effect of 50,000 active users on the platform.
Sometimes in the 90s, Southwest Airlines encounters a problem. Some airline companies expanded their regional carrier from a few states’ presences to many cities. They were operating in over 100 cities. But a company was asked to expand, and they turned the possibility for expansion down. They operated in only 4 states. At some point, other airlines were losing morning and going bankrupt, they were experiencing significant growth.
Right from 1970, the company was the only company that was on consecutive profit for over 30 years and the strategy was using the “upper bond limit” for success. The founders wanted growth in the company, but they looked at sustainable growth that will keep them in profit.
We can apply the principle to our lives no matter what we do.
An entrepreneur might say, “I want to seal 5 deals this month”
This statement is only for the minimum, with no upper limit. To keep a safety margin, it could be.
I want to seal 5 deals this month and not more than 10.
As a dev, there are times I take on gigs and won’t be able to get everything up at the right time. Then I started having issues with my clients, so setting minimum and maximum limits are so important.
A Safety Margin for Growth
As much as expansion is good, it is better to check the surrounding safety. Just like the analysis around stock buying, this is so important for continued growth.
Do things you can sustain.
