Relic War experience in Weekend Rank!

Hello everyone,

So this week as I showed in my last post, I decided to play a relic aggro war deck for my weekend ranked games. Now I had a little bit of past experience with this archetype, but this week was my first time trying it in a tough, competitive period where everyone is trying their best to snatch as much wins as possible so it was naturally a bit tough for me.

Now as expected, magic was so dominant and present this week for the obvious reasons that it is so effective in this meta, so I faced a lot of them. Luckily I was able to snatch a couple of wins away and some other from the other gods I faced and managed to get overall 14 wins which is decent but sad because it is close to 15 and the legendary pack.

I changed the deck a little bit while playing and made a few tweaks so in this post I will be showing the last version of the deck and showcasing the results with some tips and advice about it:

The deck

This was the final version of this deck, I kept changing every couple of games as I am going and seeing what cards I might need more and what cards might be better. Although sometimes I knew I did not have the best option, I went with the best one I had or was able to purchase and this was the final deck state. I will be talking about the changes I made and why I did them later on. Now let's see the deck performance in the weekend rank:

Matchups breakdown

MatchupsWins/MatchesWin rate
Light1/2
Nature3/5
Magic4/9
Death1/4
War3/3
Deception2/2
Overall14/2556%

So I was able to snatch 14 wins, not bad but not the best to say the least. I did pretty decent against the magic decks I came up against, most of them were card draw of course, but I did some mistakes at some points that costed me the games.

But I did bad against the zombie decks I faced because they were able to heal back and I was not able to finish them off as soon as I wanted to, and not always I got my bronze servant to get rid of their Necro. But overall I am a bit satisfied with the results seeing I was not very pro with the deck and it had some flaws.

Changes I did

Added a second Warmonger Smith and Echoing Fury

 "duo.jpg"

The reason I added another Warmonger was not because of the ability but rather the HP. I figured it had a bit more chances of surviving if I threw 2 of it early on and then I can protect it or give extra strength and get face damage with it. As for the Echoing Fury, the twin strike helped me do 2 important things in 1 go and that is get face damage and clear board when needed, so I had to throw another one in there!

Added Devouring Blade

 "shaoe.jpg"

I had this card in my recommend or interesting cards to add in the last post, and as expected, Ramshackle was a bit slow and caused me to have 1 or 2 dead turns sometimes, so adding this combined the 2 Ramshackle in 1 card while at the same time helping me get rid of an enemy creature which helps a lot sometimes, and helped me save a spot for an additional card in the deck so had to do this changed!

Added Feral Shapeshifter

 "devouring.jpg"

Having faced a lot of magic, I decided to add this card, with its hidden, I can buff it next round with any of the buffing cards I have, and get tons of face damage with it which can be game changing, I also decided to add this out of all other cards because it can not be taken out with neither a Crystal Rain or Shaped Blast.

Mistakes to learn from

Using Ramshackle Hatchet

 "ram.jpg"

I know it is a relic aggro deck, but this card costed me several matches I would say and it was my fault that I did not switch it as soon as possible. Getting 3 face damage in or possibly more if buffed with 2 mana is nice, but having no other effects or more durability can make you feel like you had a dead turn and make you go a bit behind. There was a lot of better options so I tried replacing them with the best ones I had.

Not being Aggressive Enough

Aggro decks are something, aggro relic is another thing by itself. It was a bit weird to me at some point that I had to hit face with the relic rather clearing or killing an enemy creature and it would have been much better at the end result if I did. Just not being so used to it made do some bad judgement and not realizing I have tons of face damage in my arsenal and I have to race to win the game. Sometimes it is just so tempting not to hit a creature with this:

 "duoo.jpg"

If we take a look at it, we have 6 damage from the Blade of Styx, 2 from the Enduring Shields, 4 from the Devouring Blade and 6 from the Dead Man's Flail summing up to 16, adding to it the 6 from the Sharpen so that is 22 in total, with god power your enemy can be dead from purely Relics, but the trick is using your creatures to get the best outcome out of them, to either keep yourself in the game if you have to, or make it easier for to finish it sooner. So I would say it is better most of the times to hit face with the relic and decide what is the best option to do with your creatures either to clear or get face also.

Keep your creatures shielded

This is not a mistakes I made but rather an advice. Most of the times when you have the Enduring Shield equipped, and you have a creature ready to attack on board, if you see it is better to clear rather than hit face, try to hit first with the creature and kill the enemy creature if your creature does not die, then get him shielded.

Having a creature shield is better than having him with full HP and unprotected most of the times because then the enemy probably will have to spend more mana to kill it!

Final Thoughts

This weekend was a little rough for me and probably for everybody out there who does not play or have the necessary magic cards to build a good deck. But having played with a non familiar deck and getting 14 wins was not the worst result I could imagine.

It was also very fun to be honest trying out a weird deck in the midst of everyone almost playing the same it was a good experience and I love to keep trying new stuff even if it is costing me some wins I would say. Up until maybe I have a lot more cards I might stop saying that and the meta might pull me in to it like a magnet nobody knows :p

So that was it for this post, hope you like it and make sure to try this archetype if you have not before, it is not so commonly used but it is very fun and unique I can say, you can maybe try it outside of weekend rank and maybe add cards to it that you feel might make it better! Here is the deck code, I recreated it from scratch on GUdecks with the final improvements that I think will make it the best it can be for me:

Hope everyone had a great weekend ranked and see you all on the next one! Mad Love, Peace out <3
