How to counter Light with Magic! 14 wins this week!

Greetings everyone,

This week was my first real weekend rank that I had all the focus and time to prepare for since the last one I was freshly unbanned so I was a little bit out of meta and a little bit confused as to what to play. But it felt good to be back, and I decided to play this week with my go to Ramp Magic deck, expecting to see a lot of Light since it is meta at the moment, and hoping it would do well against it.

So I ended up this week with a total of 14 wins, I was able to get 16 or 17 but there are some games that I lost focus and did silly mistakes which costed me the game as well as having bad luck with the starting hand and mulligan. However, I am satisfied with the 14 wins for this week because it will be my most packs in 2 weeks since the last 2 I barely got any.

So let's see how did this weekend rank go and what were the most weak points and strength points of the deck, and why I think it was a good idea to go with magic for this week.

The Deck

 "deck.jpg"

This was my weekend event rank deck for this week. As you can see it is very similar to the classic ramp deck I always post about, because I feel like I am getting better and better at it and knowing how to pilot it better than any other deck at the moment. Of course, there were a lot of aggressive decks that I faced and this deck might struggle against them, but let's see the exact results for this week:

Matchups Breakdown

MatchupsWins/MatchesWin rate
Light8/1172.7%
Nature2/450%
Magic1/250%
Death1/333.3%
War2/450%
Deception0/10%
Overall14/2556%

As you can notice, and as expected as well, I faced a lot of Light this week, but I actually did pretty well against them with a 72.7% win rate which is pretty good, I think I even lost 1 or 2 matches because of misplays I did. Also the nature decks I faced were mostly amazon since it is being played a bit more at the moment, and there were 2 unlucky games that ended with 1 round play.

I struggled against zombie death for the lack of relic removal, and this win was actually against Board Wipe which was pretty surprising to me how good is this deck against BWD. Now let's see what were the problems I expected and why I thought this deck was a good choice.

Problems Faced this week

Well the first problem I was expecting to face this week was light of course. I expected a lot of them and this is what actually happened. Now the problems with light that I expected to face at the moment are as follow:

Board Establish

Light is all about board establish. They try to get as much creatures as they can on the board at the same time, and then buff them immensely in a way they do way much damage and become unkillable. And for this they usually use 2 cards:

 "buff.jpg"

These are the 2 main buffing cards for light, as well as having Asterius at 6 mana also. But of course to use these cards, they have to get to 5 6 mana with at least 3 creatures of board to be worth it, so for this you have these amazing 3 cards that are very good as a starting hand.

 "trio.jpg"

These cards are amazing to get you to 5 6 mana unharmed and with the opponent board not established. Since most of the enemy creature will probably have 2 strength and 2 HP, these cards are beast against them and excellent for clearance. The only problem for the Lightning Talisman is if the opponent had the Iron-tooth Goblin which happened once or twice with me and costed me the game.

Pulling Cards

The second problem faced this weekend were pulling cards which are cards that makes you pull back a certain creature back to the bottom or top of your deck, which are frequently used by Light at the moment, the most 2 cards you will see now are these:

 "pull.jpg"

And these can be pretty annoying since they can get rid of your strong late game creatures or frontlines easily, thus taking face damage at the same time, or rendering your 7 or 8 mana spent pretty useless. For these 2 cards, my strategy was is to try and bait them on as early as possible with these:

 "def.jpg"

These cards can be annoying early on for Light. In case of playing them he had 2 decisions.

1- Killing them with creatures: This way he will lose his board control which makes it easier for me to get to late game this way, which I am much better then because my deck is more late game than his.

2- Use the pulling cards on them: Which is pretty much the goal here since this way the road will be free for my Labyrinth Guard and other late game creatures to stand in his way and he can be very annoying, and also this means that the face damage I will take is minimal since it would be still mid game with only 3 4 5 mana so he can't use pulling and buffing card in the same turn.

Zealous March

Now the third problem and probably the most annoying problem I expected to face, is this:

 "zealous.jpg"

Now imagine after trying your best to keep clearing board for your opponent, which you will probably have received a lot of face damage while doing it, and then him using this card, filling his board with 6 protected 2/2 acolytes which will be lethal to you, and how close to impossible it is to clear all of them in 1 turn, which is an event more of a threat since he might have a buffing card and make them even scarier next turn. Now for this card, this was my best and only solution every time my opponent used this card.

 "zeal clea.jpg"

Mostly the Shaped Blast plus Tracking Bolt. I tried to always keep them both in hand at the same time and not use them except if I really had to then it was risky for me. But keeping them you can use both of them at the same time since it will be 7 mana or more turn, and clear the board in 1 turn. This was my only most effective solution for this which worked many times as long as I got these 2 cards.

My biggest enemies this week

 "ene.jpg"

My biggest enemies this week, and the 2 most cards that I struggled against were these 2 cards.

Iron-tooth Goblin because light mostly used it to remove my lightning talisman which basically lost me the game.

Necroscepter since I did not have any relic removal and the sanctum was very unlucky which basically is free healing for my enemy and making it close to impossible to win. I was lucky I did not face many of them though this week.

Final Thoughts

To be honest I did not built this deck with the goal in mind that I was going to face a lot of Light; true I was expecting them, but this deck is the same as my usually ramp deck that I always use, I just expected it to do good against Light and it actually did so I thought of sharing that with you all.

I also feel that it would do well against BWD, not because I only 1 this 1 game which could be pretty lucky for me, but because I had answers to all his threats and whatever he might have played which I might do a post on countering it if I faced more BWD and made sure of it.

As for now that was it for this one, I hope you did not struggle this weekend against Light or you have joined their ranks and enjoyed your wins because Light is pretty good this week also but I was lacking several cards so I was not able to make a good deck with it. Hope you also like the deck make sure to give it a try if you like slow paced games like I do you will love it! Hope you all had an amazing week and see you on the next one!

Mad Love, Peace out <3

Why all the singletons? You could double up on your better cards like Lightning Talisman.

The only card worth doubling that is not doubled is the lightning talisman as I still do not own another. I feel like the others do better as ones in this deck.
