Splinterlands Brawl Report - Cycle # 279, 280, and 281

SPL - Default - Brawl (1280 x 720 px).gif

Introduction

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of Splinterlands Brawl Report brought to you by The Jedo! This post will explain how I approach some of my battles in Tier 4 Brawls while representing TeamPH. Keep in mind, this is a Wild Gold Fray where cards are limited to Advanced Level caps. I will feature one or two matches and will walk you through my thought process in deciding which Summoners and Monsters to select in different combinations of Rulesets and Mana Caps. To be fair, the games that will be featured may not always be the ones I win! Depending on the results and how unbelievable the games are, I might even add more games to the spotlight.

Now, I am not an expert player by any means and I will have some misplays from time to time. Any comments or suggestions that could help me improve my decision making and rules analyses are welcome and will be very much appreciated! Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a new player in the game, I would like to hear from you! We can all be better together! Let's get into it!

Preface

Boy, do I have a treat for you all! The following Brawl results are from the THREE most recent Brawl Cycles. My results from the previous Brawl Report can be found HERE for reference. I have been busy the past couple of weeks and didn't really have time to write up some reports. Thankfully, I have some spare time this weekend. Let's see how I did!

My Brawl Results

Below are the results of my past three Brawls. I didn't get any clean sweeps but still able to maintain a high win rate.

BRAWL NO.WINLOSS
27972
28081
28171

Some of the wins were from flees. Every win, though, is important, so I'll take what I can get! Onto the Featured Battles!

Featured Battle 1

The first featured battle is against WildFud of Bitcoin & Brews. This was from Cycle 279.

Rules of Combat: High Five, Equal Opportunity, Odd Ones Out

Mana Cap: 47

Active Elements: Life and Dragon

Strategy: Equal Opportunity means melee units can attack from anywhere and they will target the enemy unit with the lowest health first! Maximize Jared Scar's Piercing melee attacks!

Rules of the Match

I knew I was going to utilize Jared Scar but I needed to protect him. Equal Opportunity also meant that enemy units would attack the unit on my team with the lowest health. What better way to do this than to distract enemies using Taunt! Agor Longtail to the front, please!

Final Lineups

With Agor in front, I realized I needed to sustain him. Kitty would be a good summoner, I thought, since the additional Tank Heal would help Agor survive, plus the bonus speed for my team meant that there would be a higher chance to attack first. The True Strike also assured me that none of my attacks missed.

I needed a unit with Cleanse in case Agor gets poisoned or afflicted. Luceheim Demon was a good unit for this job. I placed Sacred Unicorn behind Agor as a secondary tank with Self Heal. The unicorn also had Piercing that would help break through enemy armor. Sola Ranjell is seldom selected to be on my team but I thought an additional sustain unit would be helpful for this match. She ended up taking the last available spot.

Sacred Unicorn got to attack first as soon as the match started. It took the Opportunity to quickly eliminate the enemy Marksrat. Great! Now who gets to attack next?

To my surprise, Sacred Unicorn attacked again, this time, damaging the opposing Jared Scar! The Unicorn has Trample??? I totally forgot that this unit had that ability. Come to think of it, when was the last time I used this card?

As expected, Agor distracted the enemy team and had all of them attack him and he survived the assault. My Jared Scar then had the chance to attack its twin on the opposing end, killing the enemy swiftly and therefore boosting his own stats due to Bloodlust.

The battle kept going and the onslaught did not stop. My piercing melee attacks were just too much for the enemy units to handle.

Battle Result

Nice win! Great to see the units I seldom use perform well in battles. Maybe I need to play them more. What do you think?

Featured Battle 2

The second featured battle was from Cycle 280. Home field advantage going against Pfork! I wasn't sure how this one was gonna go just by analyzing the rulesets.

Rules of Combat: Little League, Back to Basics, Lost Magic

Mana Cap: 45

Active Elements: All but Fire

Strategy: No magic units allowed and melee units would not do anything unless they're in first position. Little League so the pool of units is limited. Use Ilthain to take advantage of the expected enemy ranged attacks. Expect a mirror match.

Rules of the Match

Man, this was a boring one. I knew I was going to face a somewhat similar lineup. Either my ranged attacks hit and I deal with Return Fire, or they miss and get frustrated I couldn't deal damage to the enemy.

Final Lineups

As expected, it's an Ilthain mirror match and it will all come down to which units survive the returned range attacks. Seeing his level 7 Ajax Lightfoot worried me a bit due to its superior speed compared to mine!

Even though are lineups are almost the same, one of the things to note in this battle is the positioning for our main and secondary tanks. I had Xenith Monk at first and Halfling Refugee in the 2nd position while my opponent had them the other way around. Both units have the same health but I decided to place the Monk in 1st position because he was faster than the Refugee. Had I switched the two, would the final result be different?

Battle Results

Towards the end, I had more units survive the ricocheting arrows. Did I just get lucky with RNG or did I just have better positioning and unit choices? Hmmmm..

BONUS! Featured Battle 3

The third and final battle is from the most recent brawl, Cycle 281. This is one of those battles where as soon as you see your opponent's lineup, you just skip the match because you know there's no way you could win that. I watched the first few attacks that happened and then decided to just skip the battle. Did something out of the ordinary happen? Let's find out!

Rules of Combat: What Doesn't Kill You, Beefcakes, and Counterspell

Mana Cap: 46

Active Elements: All but Dragon

Strategy: Dodge Tank in front with Cryptic as summoner. Avoid magic. Utilize units with high speed.

Rules of the Match

I almost selected Yodin as my summoner. With the Counterspell ruleset, I expected a no-magic lineup. The problem was that if I dealt blast damage to my opponent's units, Enrage would trigger, further increasing the stats of the opposing team. I debated using Cryptic instead. The Dragon Splinter was inactive so I knew Kitty, a summoner that can grant units True Strike, will be unavailable. Cryptic, with a speed deduction plus Blind, it is, then.

Tactics Stage

Honestly, I wasn't sure what I was trying to do here. I included Wavebrood as a backline Taunt monster for distraction. Angelic Mandarin was also selected to sustain my backline. Delya, with her Double Attack, would be helpful with Cryptic's tactic that provides Poison and Expose. Tatiana Blayde was there because she was speedy. Same with Almo Cambio as a fast, dodging tank.

But what was I trying to accomplish here?

I made Tatiana Blayde as the second recipient of Cryptic's tactic hoping this was enough to cause some crazy debuffs to my opponents lineup.

Final Lineups

As soon as I saw Yodin as the enemy summoner, I knew I was in trouble. I noticed my opponent went for a Snipe play, targeting the 1st non-melee unit in my backline. I had Wavebrood standing in the last position so almost all attacks will be directed to it. With Yodin's blast, I already predicted what was about to happen - Wavebrood dies and Angelic Mandarin goes down with it. That's exactly what happened, but not before these 2 units contributed to the demise of the enemy tank, Lava Launcher.

My gladiator, Tatiana, got eliminated shortly after due to blast damage. It didn't take long before my Merdaali Guardian took a big swing with a Snipe attack, and perished.

I'm done, I thought to myself, as I click on Skip Battle.

Battle Results

Victory!

.... what??

You are not gonna believe what happened! You do not want to MISS this!

Summary

Plenty of TeamPH Brawlers have gotten favorable results throughout the past Brawls. Some of my teammates even had Flawless Victories in Cycle 280! We finished 5th, 3rd, and 2nd overall respectively in the mentioned Brawl Cycles. Can't always get a podium finish.

Congratulations to all winners! We strive to be the best every time. I know we still have plenty of work to do but soon, we will achieve that ever elusive 1ST PLACE!

Final Thoughts

As always, Brawls are so much fun! I understand that I still have so much to learn. Some of my wins might have been because of luck. Some might be actual good plays that other players can learn from. Either way, I hope you guys enjoyed this article and if you have questions, comments, or feedback for me, please let me know! Let's all learn and grow together and set each other up for success!
