The TX-1000: A Futuristic Rifle Design Idea for PsyberX

I am looking for things to practice and improve my hard surface modeling skills when I came across PsyberXs’ NFT Gun Design Contest. It find it to be a great opportunity to enter to. I chose a futuristic gun as I have no knowledge on gun design nor I have modeled one before.

The main challenge I encountered is how to find an inspiration design to kick start my own. Second, browsing existing models online makes me belittle my skills as a beginner 3D artist. Anyways, I was able to muster my courage and here I am. This post will be a documentation on my starting point on designing/modeling guns.

My Process Flow

The first stage of my modeling process is to find an inspiration. I just took a glance online on my search results as I don’t want to end up making a copy of my inspiration.

From a cube, I shaped it roughly to the shape of the handle of the gun that I saw online.

From here on, I just improvised by altering the geometry and shaping it to how I want it to look.

First, I started with the main handle by modifying and adding my own details on it.

I added a trigger slot next and few more details to the handle.

Second, I modified the butt next and add in some details.

Third, I added details to the handguard.

Fourth, I proceed next to model the scope.

Fifth, I added what my model was missing – the bullet magazine and its slot. I forgot about it at first so I have to modify my main handle and give a space for it. 😅

Sixth, I added in the trigger.

Fifth, I added a solidify modifier and added more geometry to keep its shape. I also added in few details as I see fit.

Finally, I added in the materials. Since this is a futuristic gun, I made parts around the handguard glow.

There it is. This is my entry for PsyberX NFT Gun Design Contest.
I named my entry TX-1000 basing on the Terminators' T-1000 that came from the future. 🙂

I didn't put a lot detail on it so around 5 - 8 hours.
