SPLINTERLANDS LAND EXCITEMENT!

"Wen Land?" is a question that I heard a lot when I started playing splinterlands several months ago. Apparently, players had been waiting for the land expansion way before I got into the game last May. From the research I did, the Land presale started back in November of 2020 but the entire development was stalled (in a sense) ever since. I can only imagine the frustration of the community (especially those that got in early) when this feature was not released as early as hoped for. Many people bought land plots for as low as $10 to $20 and watched it do a 100X. Some players rushed to get in on this and purchased their plots at $500 up to $1000. As the excitement slowly died down, the price of Land crashed and I can only imagine that many players were left discouraged.

I did not experience most of the disappointment that the OG players had to deal with. When I got into the game, I bought my plot for about $178 but right now it is priced at $150 on Hive engine. I've seen the price of the token fluctuate up and down but it is nothing compared to what the older players have experienced. Still, I share in the excitement of the recent developments made to the realization of Land in Splinterlands.

ALAS, LAND

When Land Phase 0.5 was released back in December, the community was elated. I was excited that Land was finally getting worked on but I did not redeem my deeds because I wanted my plot to remain tradeable. Recently though, I found out that these deeds can be sold and so I redeemed mine.

From the image above, my plot is Plot 51 in Tract 3 of Region 48 which is Tridale. This region is in the "Land Of Prosperity" territory. I'm not totally sure what these mean but it feels good to have a slice (although very small) of Praetoria. If only I could get more!

A Game Within A Game

When I bought land I was not sure what I wanted to do with it. I applied some real life mindset combined with the success of virtual land on other projects to predict the future value. Considering the fact that it was once priced at over $1000 and that it is relatively scarce compared to the number of players in the game, I felt like it was a good asset to "gamble with". Back then, I did some research but I still did not understand how Land would be used. So, I bought the land plot and planned to resell it if it did a possible 10X.

As I got to understand the value of this asset better, I started to consider renting mine out when it gets developed. I changed my mind again after I read the summary of the February 13th Town Hall and saw how serious the team was taking Land. They described the buildings and resource part as a "long term thing" and likened it to "building a business". That got me super interested and I started to do more research on Land.

Just recently I got to know the different Terrains, Category and Rarity that a plot can possibly be. I also got to know how these features can affect the utility of a plot. Essentially, the development of land creates a new ecosystem where each owner belongs to a niche. Land owners would be able produce to necessary materials for creation of Items and Spells cards which would be used in the game. This asset is going to bring massive changes to splinterlands and the best part is that it would be controlled solely by the players. An entire economy in the hands of players around the world? I definitely want to be a part of that!

Just like every other player, I hope that my plot would be a more valuable piece but I cannot influence that. What I can do, though, is try as much as possible to maximize the asset I receive. I have already taken an initial step by buying my first DEC-B tokens.

DEC-BATTERIES

DEC-B is supposed to provide some benefits to land owners. The recent proposal suggests that players be able to burn the same amount of DEC or DEC-B tokens to obtain land "starter packages". Given that DEC-B is currently purchased at a discount with DEC, it will make sense to use DEC-B for this.

Right now, buying DEC-B with vouchers is cheaper than doing so with DEC. $10 worth of vouchers would buy north of 18,800 DEC-B while $10 worth of DEC would get you just 17,361 DEC-B (at current prices).

I recently bought 2,000 DEC-B for 10 voucher tokens.

Most of these voucher tokens were earned from staking SPS which is a benefit that I forgot to mention in my previous post!

Of course, I plan to buy more DEC-B tokens over the weeks. Not only will I be able to use the tokens for certain bonuses but I will not be tempted to sell them when a situation arises. I hope to purchase as much as possible before the sale ends in April or before they all get sold out.

"Building a Business". A downside?

For a long time, I have heard whispers about how we have to stake monsters and summoners cards that would work on our land plots. Recently, I heard that the slots for cards would be limited and it would make sense to have higher level cards staked. These cards would cost quite a sum to level up.

Apart from the cards, there are other things to spend on in order to optimize a single plot of land. Some of these expenses include DEC to be staked, Building constructions and upgrades, other land boosts and many more things that I am not aware of just yet. This means that in order to optimize the work done on a plot, a lot of money will need to be spent! The thought of this was scary to me initially but I have come to think of it differently.

I like the fact that this entire Land idea is pretty broad. I have come to appreciate how complex the land concept is expected to be. This is not something that the average player like me can just dump a few dollars in and hope for a quick cash grab. Land, however, is something that you would have to stick with if you really want to reap the benefits. It definitely is going to be a "long term thing" and I love that.

Final Words

It is impossible for any true splinterlands player to not be excited about the development of Land. The release of Land is expected to change the way we play the game. I am glad that this is now a priority and it is quickly being developed. In no time, we would be able to survey our plots and begin to plan how we would put them to work. Something huge is definitely coming to splinterlands!

It’s like $140 right now. It’s pretty expensive but not as much as it used to be. You should get one if you can🙂
