Hill Giant | The Underrated Low Mana Tank

Earth is my most used Chaos Legion Splinter. I have almost all the Earth monster cards for the Chaos Legion Edition except Queen Mycelia and Fungus Fiend. Of course, I plan to get these cards so that I can complete my deck but that may take some time.

Among all the cards I have right now, Hill Giant is an important monster in most Earth teams I come up with. It was not always like that, though, as I did not rate this monster high probably because its card art is not so appealing to look at. It was after a share your battle challenge where this monster was the theme that I realized the gem that I had been sleeping on.

Let's Take A Look At The Hill Giant...

The Hill Giant is a common monster that costs just 3 mana. In my opinion, 3 mana is quite generous for what this card has to offer. Well, he does not have any abilities at the lower levels but he is quite good just like that. I have this card at level 5 (max for silver) and I have been using him to destroy my enemies over and over again.

At level 5, Hill Giant still does not have any abilities but I don't mind. His biggest strength for me at that level is the 8x health. This makes Hill Giant a low mana tank that can be used in a number of rulesets. Imagine a 3 mana monster giving the opponent a hard time to get through. That is pretty annoying. The 2x damage and speed are ok but can be really useful in the Reverse Speed ruleset.

There are two other monsters that I like to play with Hill Giant and these are Queen Mycelia and Goblin Psychic. Both of them are relatively low mana monsters and can fit in most games as well.

Queen Mycelia

Queen Mycelia is a very popular monster that gets just the right amount of attention. The reason I love to play her with Hill Giant is mainly because of that Protect ability. This adds to the tank quality of the Giant making him more stronger. This extra 2+ armor buff is especially useful in the Weak Magic and "Earthquake" rulesets.

It's easy to think that Queen Mycelia's amplify is wasted on Hill Giant. That's true in most cases but in certain conditions, the amplify can really be exploited;

Introducing Mylor Crowling

image.png

Ah yes. I remember the good old days when I would always rent Mylor and totally terrorize my opponents. Mylor's thorns are undoubtedly one of the greatest buffs in bronze and silver leagues. Now, a low mana monster like Hill Giant, with a pretty decent health, getting this buff is quite a threat if he is backed up by Queen Mycelia's Amplify.

Rulesets For Amplify

There are certain rulesets that can be really good for the Mycelia's amplify and Hill Giant combo. The rulesets are given below;

RULESETICONDESCRIPTION
Fire And Regretimage.pngAll monsters receive the return fire ability
Counterspellimage.pngAll monsters receive the magic reflect ability
Briar Patchimage.pngAll monsters receive the Thorns ability

Goblin Psychic

image.png

The Hill Giant has a decent health amount and I always try my best to maximize that quality. One way I do this is with the help of Goblin Psychic's Tank Heal ability. This ensures that Hill Giant lasts longer that the enemy would expect for a 3 mana monster. If the Giant has some of the buffs mentioned above, and Queen Mycelia's amplify was at play, he would get to do more damage on the battlefield.

Battle Examples

In this battle, the amplify ability was not used but the protect was useful against Cursed Windeku's attack. Goblin Psychic was also able to heal the Hill Giant multiple times keeping him strong on the frontline.

Final Words

This combo of the cards mentioned is not full proof. Sure, I have lost many times while playing these cards together but I have also won more times than I have lost. It works in the bronze and silver leagues. I hope I have been able to enlighten some new (and even old) players with this article.
