Guide for spending on Chaos packs or single cards.

With Chaos Legion fast approaching its a great time to look at how many packs should be purchased. Or perhaps avoid packs all together and just buy individual cards on the resale market. The questions that often comes up is how many packs should I get and when should I buy?

It is a highly variable answer depending on what league you are trying for, how much money you are investing, and how many cards you already have. However, here are the numbers I've come up with followed by an explanation on how I came up with those numbers:

  1. Novice League -- $347.73

  2. Bronze League-- $596.75

  3. Silver League -- $1,884.46

  4. Gold League -- $4,855.47

  5. Diamond/Champion League -- $8,435.22

Did I just pick those numbers out of thin air? Actually, no, I did a bit of math. With the current distribution of cards, chance of legendary/gold card and the use of potions there there will be roughly 142.64 CP worth of cards in each $4 pack. Assuming potions are used. That means that a common card with 5 CP should be valued at 14 cents. Reward cards can't use potions so they should be slightly more valuable at 17 cents.

In list form :

  1. Common -- 14 cents
  1. Rare -- 56 cents

  2. Epic -- $2.80

  3. Legendary -- $14.20

The current prices of cards seems to support this math and now there is a basic of how much to spend on each card in the Splinterlands Chaos legion set.

Now the big unknown in the Chaos Legion set is how many cards are going to be released. I couldn't find any mention of it so I'm going to make a huge guess and say that there will be 4 commons, 4 rare, 3 epics, 2 legendary for each splinter except for dragon which gets 8 legendary. If I'm right that makes for :

  1. Common -- 24 cards
  2. Rare -- 24 cards
  3. Epic -- 18 cards
  4. Legendary -- 20 cards

For possibly 86 cards in total. That would make it larger than Beta or Untamed but I'm just guessing and hoping so I'll use that number. Also a number of those cards will airdrops so those who buy early don't have to buy as many cards because they will arrive by airdrops.

To be truly a master at your level the collection should contain one of each card levelled to the maximum for your tier. In novice that means only having one of each card. However, in Diamond even a common card gets expensive when you need 440 of them to level it up!

Here's the table for Chaos legion Card upgrades:

and if you want to see the cost for those cards based on the values I calculated above the table looks like this:

Then take the cost for each card and multiply by the total number of cards in the set and you end up with this :

What are my recommendations for spending?

1. Fixed Budget

Don't buy packs. When the set comes out find the key cards you need to make up an assortment of decks and pick only the most useful cards. Rent the rest as needed

2. Novice

Buy 100 packs. With that there will be 500 cards which should provide 6 legendary which isn't all of them but enough to fill in many spots. 20 Epic cards which should be enough to cover all of the print run. If not sell a couple duplicates to get funds to buy the missing ones. Same thing goes for the common and rares.

Also with 100 packs you should get 1-2 of each airdropped card. One to keep and one to sell.

3. Bronze
Buy 150 packs. With the 750 cards there should be 9 legendary cards. Not all of them but as there will be extra commons/rares to sell and some legendary are likely to be airdropped it gets very close to a complete set with cards levelled to Bronze level.

4. Silver
Buy 300 packs. Why? You need 3 legendary cards to level your card to lvl 2 (max for silver level). Each 100 packs and there should be a legendary so 300 packs should get you the 3 legendary you need for each airdrop. There will be some missing cards from a complete set which I would personally buy on the singles market.

5. Gold
Buy 600 packs. Notice above? 6 Legendary cards are required for lvl 3 (max for silver level) so 600 packs should get you an appropriate airdropped card. Fill in necessary cards from the singles market.

6. Diamond
Buy 1100 packs. Same as above except you need 11 of each legendary to max it out and 1100 packs should get you those legendaries from the airdrop. Max out other cards as necessary from the singles market.

When would I spend?

If you feel you must have Doctor Blight then in the initial pre-sale. However, with the price of vouchers I really don't think it makes any sense.

If the price of vouchers drops considerably I'd consider buying in the second round. However, it might be a better to sell vouchers and just buy the airdropped card after the second million sells out.

Personally I'm aiming for the first million after the pre-sale is over. I'll be eligible for the majority of airdropped cards. I won't have to pay the voucher fee. However, things could sell out quickly when it goes free for all and that could make me regret waiting.

Only time will tell.
...and Happy hunting!
