Ilocos Empanada

Who's in for a foodie?

Last December to January, the town of Pugo, La Union, Philippines had a market fair just within the vicinity of the Pugo Public Market. And one thing I was sure I didn't miss was this...

This is one of the stalls in the market which sells Ilocos Empanada. There is another permanent stall which offers Ilocos Empanada all year round but for this time, I wanted to try this one.

First, they flatten the crust and assemble the filling.

Then, deep fry in a pot of boiling oil.

A crunchy Empanada!

I specifically asked for additional vinegar because I just love it!

Blurrrrrry coz I'm busy eating.

How it looks when half eaten.

Ilocos Empanada has been one of my favorites ever since I tasted it.

It's just a crust colored orange with a filling of a mixture of grated green Papaya/ Papaw Fruit, the famous Ilocos Longanisa, one whole egg, monggo and maybe some spices to add to its flavor.

I am not sure how they the ingredients or what they add to it but all I know is that it's really really good.

This is one food one shouldn't miss when visiting the Ilocos region in the Philippines. Each place has their own version and they each are good depending on one's own taste. The best time to eat it? while it's hot!
