Splinterlands Fan Art - Animated Corpse

Lore from Splinterlands:

A fledgling Dark Eternal is also known as an Animated Corpse. Emerging from the Tar Pits of Creation in the Southern Waste of Mortis, each fledgling must first shed what remains of its mortal flesh. While in decay, the Animated Corpses are placed on the front lines to speed their transition.

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my Splinterlands fan art post. After a hiatus in making fan arts in Hive, I am back and I’m excited to share with you my most recent fan art. The weather here is quite gloomy because of the typhoons that are bombarding our country and the cozy weather makes me want to draw something cute. And so, for this entry, I’ve chosen to draw a Common Death Unit from the Alpha/Beta Card Set. This card is quite old but I would like to give life to it again.

Here is the original image from Splinterlands.

The concept of this fan art is to create a cute version of Animated Corpse in a graveyard filled with ghosts.

I used the following tools and apps in creating this fan art of Animated Corpse.

  • Android Tablet
  • Sketchbook for Mobile

Step-by-step creation process:

Animated Corpse:

  • Rough sketch of the main object, which is the Animated Corpse.
  • Clean line art over a white background.
  • Base color in reference to the original image.
  • Applied shadows using multiply layer. I also duplicated the layer and made the other one slightly blurred.
  • Added soft glow in another layer.

Background:

  • Apply a combination of purple and pink for the sky.
  • Clean line art of different objects. This includes the tomb, flower, grass, ghost, tree, cloud and moon.
  • Applied base color, preferrably pastel colors.
  • Change the color of the line art of each object to match its base color.
  • Slightly blur each object to make the main object (Animated Corpse) to be the center of attention.

Here is the process in gif to show the step by step procedure.

And here is the final output of this fan art.

The part that I enjoyed the most in creating this art was designing the zombie’s expression and pose. Making it look like it was clumsily getting out while rising from its grave. It was fun giving it not-so-scary features like the silly eyes, drooly mouth, missing teeth and goofy expression. The ghosts floating around were made a little cute than normal. I gave them a happy face instead of a scary one. As much as possible, I used rounded edges to make the scene less scary and appealing to our little ones. Flowers were added to lighten the mood and to make it like Plants vs Zombies. The main object as well as the background objects were painted using pastel colors. The color choices were very important in making the scene fun and eye-catching. Bright pastel colors were used all throughout — soft greens, purples, pinks, and blues — to give a not so scary vibe. The background is filled with soft clouds, a crescent moon, and pruple trees, all adding to a magical nighttime feeling without being too dark or spooky.

Overall, this artwork was meant to show that even scary characters like the Animated Corpse can be fun and cute when you change the style and colors. It’s perfect for playful Halloween themes or for anyone who enjoys spooky things without the fright. I really enjoyed the playful process of transforming a spooky character into something lighthearted and cute.
