Fungus Flinger - Splinterlands Art Contest Week 371 [ENG/ESP]

Hello friends, Alien Art community, and everyone who in one way or another is part of the Splinterlands universe. Yes, we’re continuing to draw this character—one I find especially versatile for reinterpretations. This week’s protagonist is Fungus Flinger. And yes, I know it’s the second time I’ve drawn him, but as I mentioned in the previous blog, I planned to change the type of mushroom. In the last entry, we worked with an Amanita. But more than a week has passed and I didn’t want to waste time, so I decided to move forward with another drawing. Today we’ll revisit this character because I’m bringing you a redesign. This time, the mushroom chosen is a Psilocybe cubensis. And yes, of course we’ll talk about this protagonist and his role in the Splinterlands universe, but we’ll also talk about this new mushroom to learn a bit more. He’s a character I really like—I even find him a little kawaii, but also dangerously kawaii, like all Splinterlands creatures. When you’re ready, let’s begin today’s drawing. Here we go!

Hola amigos, comunidad de Alien Art y todos los que de una forma u otra formamos parte del universo de Splinterlands. Y sí, continuamos dibujando sobre este personaje—uno de los que creo más versátiles para realizar reinterpretaciones. Esta semana tendremos de protagonista a Fungus Flinger. Y sí, sé que es la segunda vez que lo dibujo, pero como adelanté en el blog anterior, cambiaría el tipo de hongo. En la entrega anterior realizamos un Amanitas. Pero ya ha pasado más de una semana y no quería perder el tiempo, así que decidí continuar con otro dibujo. Hoy vamos a abordar nuevamente este personaje, porque les traigo un rediseño, y le ha tocado en esta ocasión a un hongo Psilocybe cubensis. Y sí, por supuesto que hablaremos de este protagonista y su función en el universo de Splinterlands, pero también hablaremos de este nuevo hongo para aprender un poco. Es un personaje que, la verdad, me gusta mucho y lo veo hasta un poco kawaii, pero a la vez que kawaii peligroso, como todas las criaturas de Splinterlands. Cuando estén listos, comenzamos con el dibujo de hoy. ¡Allá vamos!

We’ll start with the mushroom and then move on to the character. Fungus Flinger is a small creature that throws chunks of fungus at any threat, with impressive accuracy. Its gooey projectiles explode on impact, blinding the target. Fungus Flinger is often used in strategic combinations with other characters to maximize damage in battles. So, when we analyze it, we’re looking at a small but potentially deadly creature—and we’ll need to reflect that in our drawing.

Empezamos primero con el hongo y después con el personaje. Fungus Flinger es una pequeña criatura que lanza pedazos de hongo a cualquier amenaza, siendo bastante precisa. Sus proyectiles pastosos explotan al contacto, cegando al objetivo. Fungus Flinger es utilizado frecuentemente en combinaciones estratégicas con otros personajes para maximizar el daño en los combates. Así que, analizando, tenemos a una criatura pequeña pero potencialmente mortal, y tendremos que reflejar eso en nuestro dibujo.

For my fan art, I wanted to reinterpret Fungus Flinger, but this time inspired by a different mushroom. Specifically, we already did the beautiful, magical, yet dangerous Amanita muscaria, and now we’ll work with Psilocybe cubensis. This species of mushroom contains chemical compounds like psilocin and psilocybin. They grow to about 12 cm tall and have that distinctive bell-shaped cap. The spores are purplish-brown, and we’ll draw them held in the character’s hands. The stems are hollow and range in color from creamy white to yellowish-brown. These are psychedelic mushrooms—psilocybin is a substance that, once ingested, alters mood, perception, and behavior. Depending on the dose, it can produce intermittent psycho-sensory phenomena. It induces a dreamlike, visionary state of consciousness and heightens perception. The primary effects of ingesting one gram orally last about four to six hours. These effects can range from laughter, disinhibition, or talkativeness, to visual and auditory hallucinations, and even deep, novel perspectives on reality, time, and space. In our drawing, this will be represented not only through the character’s eyes but also through their perception of their own body—composed of more happy mushrooms.

Para mi fan art quise hacer una reinterpretación de Fungus Flinger, pero en esta ocasión inspirada en otro hongo. Para ser específicos, ya hicimos a la bella y mágica pero peligrosa Amanita muscaria, y en esta ocasión haremos a Psilocybe cubensis. Es una especie de hongo que contiene compuestos químicos como la psilocina y la psilocibina. Son hongos que miden aproximadamente unos 12 cm y tienen esa forma peculiar de sombrero campana. Las esporas son café purpúreo y las dibujaremos sostenidas en sus manos. Los tallos son huecos, de colores blancos cremosos o amarillos amarronados. Son hongos psicodélicos—la psilocibina es una sustancia que, incorporada al organismo, modifica la afectividad, la relación con el entorno y el comportamiento. Dependiendo de la dosis, se pueden producir fenómenos psico-sensoriales intermitentes. Proporciona un estado de consciencia onírico, visionario y un incremento de la percepción. Los efectos primarios de la ingesta por vía oral de un gramo de estos hongos duran en promedio de cuatro a seis horas. Algunos de los efectos pueden ir desde cierta hilaridad, desinhibición o locuacidad, pasando por alucinaciones visuales y auditivas, hasta profundas y nuevas perspectivas de la realidad, el tiempo y el espacio. Eso estará en nuestro dibujo representado no solo por los ojos del personaje, sino por su percepción de su cuerpo compuesto por más hongos felices.

Psilocybe cubensis

Now that we have all this context and everything we know about this mushroom, we can finally sketch our little fungi. I want to make it even more kawaii than the original design, which is already very cute. We’ll add branching mushrooms on its head and make them happy and smiling thanks to the effect of the psychedelic spores. In its hands, it will hold two spores like bombs. For the entire drawing, I’ll be using Photoshop as my drawing tool.

Ahora con todo este contexto, y todo lo que sabemos sobre este hongo, podemos de una vez y por todas realizar el boceto de nuestro honguito. Quiero hacerlo aún mucho más kawaii que el diseño original, que ya de por sí es muy bonito. Le agregaremos los hongos ramificados en la cabeza y lo haremos felices y sonrientes por el efecto de las esporas psicodélicas. En sus manos sostendrá las dos esporas como bombas. Para todo mi dibujo estaré usando Photoshop como herramienta de dibujo.

Now it’s time for the line art. I’ll be using a thin brush—approximately 8 to 9 pixels—because I’ll be playing with pressure to achieve different line variations. I’ll also be adding a bit of value where the lines intersect. And this is how the final line art turned out.

Ahora es el turno del line art. Estaré usando un pincel delgado—aproximadamente entre 8 a 9 píxeles—porque estaré jugando con la presión para lograr distintas variaciones en la línea. También estaré agregando al final un poco de valor en donde se tocan las líneas. Así quedó el line art final.

And last but not least, we’ll move on to the coloring of our entire drawing, which we’ll also do in Photoshop. First, we’ll block out solid colors for each section and shape of the body. Then, we’ll add highlights, shadows, and gradients to each color to create volume. We’ll be combining a color palette that starts with the oranges and browns of the mushroom it’s based on, and we’ll add greens, yellows, and pinks to evoke the psychedelic poison effect caused by the mushroom. For the background, we’ll create a spiral using those last colors, and we’ll apply a slight blur and a touch of chromatic aberration to the drawing.

Y lo último pero no menos importante será el coloreado de todo nuestro dibujo, que también haremos en Photoshop. Primero con bloques de colores sólidos para cada sección y forma del cuerpo, y después a cada color le agregaremos luces, sombras y degradados para generar volumen. Estaremos combinando una paleta de colores que va de los colores naranjas y cafés del hongo en el que está basado, a la que le agregaremos verdes, amarillos y rosas para ese efecto de veneno psicodélico causado por el hongo. Para el fondo estaremos haciendo una espiral con esos últimos colores, además le aplicaremos al dibujo un ligero desenfoque y un poco de aberración cromática.
