In this blog post, read why Investors should look into playing #Splinterlands. I will share my experience so far.

Play for Fun vs. Playing for Investments

The most common question is, why do people play games? People have played for entertainment value in the last 40 years since Ping and Pac-Man. It was fun. It was a "time-killer". It was a challenge to beat the game or get a high score.

Here is a quick summary of reasons to play video games:

  • For Fun, entertainment, etc.
  • New experience (novelty)
  • Competency or mastery (high score, beating the game).
  • Exploration (open-world games) or External/Internal Exploration.
  • Social or community based
  • Competition
  • Income and Career.

Income and Career are mostly around working for a Triple-A game maker. Today you can have a career in YouTubing about video games, and if you have enough followers, you can monetize your YouTube channel.

E-Sport is still a relatively new concept but has been made popular if you follow the League of Legends World Championships. The next concept is #play2earn and owning assets!

Play2Earn - Intro

image.png

Play2Earn is a very new concept. Depending on what you call a game, some think it started around 2014 or 2018 (Article). Play2Earn means that you can play a game, own the in-game assets, earn rewards as part of the "game" design, etc. For this to work, the BLOCKCHAIN is used to track ownership and movement of assets. Anything not using the blockchain will not be considered a Play2Earn (Web 3.0) game.

Splinterlands - Intro

Steem Monster was released around May 2018. The game is a trading card game (TCG) like Magic The Gathering (MTG) using CARDS as the NFT. The design included the ability to combine cards to Level them up. This concept causes a popular card's supply/demand curve to get valuable as people want to level up that asset. Later it was renamed to #Splinterlands!

They started accepting BTC, LTC and ETH that year. They had an airdrop of cards back on June 14, 2018. Here is the rest of other milestones they had over the last 6 years:

Splinterlands - Why am I still playing right now?

The game has existed since 2018, and there are many ways to play as an investor. There isn't just one way to play as an investor.

How to earn playing this game:

  • Cards / Packs (and market system)
  • Daily Chest / End of Season Chest
  • Rental Market System
  • Land (v2.0)
  • SplinterForge (3rd Party)
  • Hive Blockchain (PEAKD / LeoFinance)

The most common way is to hold cards. Cards are the backbone of the game. There are Monster cards and summoners cards. Card values will fluctuate based on the supply/demand curve. Gold Foil cards have a different use case and can be used in Guild Gold Foil Fray.

Daily/EoS Chest allows you to earn SPS, MERIT and REWARD CARDS. The concept of reward cards was started on Jan 5, 2019. Some of these "free" rewards cards are worth $11+ (Legendary Beta Rewards), $5+ (Legendary Untamed Rewards), and $0.60 (Legendary Chaos Legion Rewards). These are random drops in your chest! Reward cards can be earned without buying new cards if you want to play in Wild Format.

The rental card market allows you to rent all the extra cards you are not using. This is a way to earn DEC with cards not actively used in Battle.

Sometimes you have a Gold Foil and a Regular Foil of the same card. You can rent out one or the other to earn something for your card assets. This is why Play2Earn/ owning your asset is an important concept. There is a marketplace for your assets, and you decide what to do with them.

Land (v1.5) is coming in August of 2023. Many think this will increase card prices and create a floor price on older cards. The land costs money to purchase, and the common plot currently goes for about $40 (USD). The land also requires workers (CARDS) to work the land which needs DEC to be staked on those cards. This gives DEC utility and creates more use cases for all the tokens within the game.

From SPL Land Doc:
Items and spells will be new types of playable cards in the future of Splinterlands. Instead of a single round of drafting then submitting a team, there will then be a second round in which players have a chance to play items and spells to further affect the action of the battle.

Items and Spells are one of the main purposes and goals of the Splinterlands land expansion. Players will have the exclusive ability to produce Items and Spells, meaning that they will not be officially sold by Splinterlands from a supply. Players will have to rely upon the resources and crafting of their own land, and on the secondary Item and Spell markets managed by other players.

SplinterForge (3rd Party) is NOT part of the Splinterland game but can leverage the same assets. Your cards can be used to fight BOSSES, and you can earn FORGE tokens. Some players use those to increase their HERO stats; others cash out and convert it into DEC.

Posting blogs on the Hive Blockchain (PEAKD / LeoFinance) will earn you HIVE. This is a good way to make more " related " tokens to this game. What you are reading right now will be upvoted by the Splinterland Team, and that will make me a few dollars.

Account Value (moving up in value)

During 2022 and 2023, my account value ranged between $200-$300. The account was moving up around June 2023 because I won the new cards from watching #SplinterlandTV.

image.png

I will expect my account to end around $500-$550. At some point in the future, the current Soul Bound Reward cards will be tradable and have some value. Today, the cards are valued at "zero" because they are locked and have no market value.

By the time 2024/2025 comes around, new cards will be released, and I would expect some of the ChaosLegion/RiftWatcher cards to be worth more than what they are trading today.

Splinterlands is a #play2earn NFT game that can be fun and profitable. All it takes is some time and a few assets to play. Your number of assets should grow over years of collecting cards and rewards from the chest. I think value will come from owning as many assets as possible.
