Giving Kiara Lightbringer some Glow Up!
I was looking for inspiration in the old cards in Splinterlands. It's been 5 years (I think?) since Splinterlands first released. That means some of the style is also dated. One character took my attention and it's Kiara Lightbringer.
I may not be a good artist yet but I feel like I can do some things to improve her look while retaining the charm Kiara Lightbringer had.
Drawing Process
Guide and Lineart
My guides are more messy than usual since I'm trying to improve it. Like I always said, I don't normally use guides unless it's needed for perspectives, to see where my character faces and if it's balanced, simple things like that. Since the Splinterlands Weekly Art Challenge is technically a tutorial for how I do things, I want to make that part better. I will try to improve that part bit by bit.
I did some changes in Kiara Lightbringer's old style, especially the armor. My new one seems a bit dull and normal, not going to lie, but if I adapt some of Kiara Lightbringer's old colors and style, this would be better.
Other than the armor, the biggest change would be the sword making it to a more normal one because she uses a Scimitar style, which is normally used by pirates and villains.
Lastly, the Shield has the same idea but made it adapt as a flat design instead of looking like a sticker added to a shield.
Base Colors
As usual, I laid out the colors first as it makes me able to work faster and more efficient before coloring.
Next, since this would be an improvement of the original, I want a different color. I understand the choices for those colors but to me, it makes Kiara Lightbringer too childish. So, I spruced her up with some steel plated armor.
I'm not satisfied with the Kiara Lightbringer's skin color on the original art because I thought it was too bright or light. Even the shadow part is too light so I had a little help from Mr. Google. I checked out sites and images until I found what I need in color-hex.com
I wanted some shiny silver armor for Kiara Lightbringer's new look so I needed some new color template. I remember Erza Scarlet from Fairytail had a lot of armors. This is the one I got. I used the colors on the wings as the template for my Kiara Lightbringer's armor.
Adding Details
My ADHD worked hard these past few days so instead of my usual two-color style, I did three, including highlights. It's not on everything because I want to make it as subtle as possible but you can certainly tell it. If your eyes focused on one area of this week's art, then I did something special on that part.
I always talk about perspectives so please, don't bash me too much about lighting perspective. As you can see, I am really bad at it as I don't follow a solid light source. I don't know how others keep this consistent but for now, if my color works, I'll stick to that and improve it little by little.
Background
I made some new simple background that loops like the one they used in Rebellion. For this Life Splinter, I made something that looked like a modified cross with a white to orange gradient. It's some easy quick things that would be neat to have than a white background.
I had many of these made recently which you would see in the upcoming weeks, different from each elements, whichever applies, if I don't feel like doing any backgrounds for them.
