Religious NFTs of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) and Blockchain Technology

Jesus lives on the blockchain.

At least that's the connotation that today's article in publico suggests when it says in its headline

Relíquias religiosas do Museu de São Roque vão viver na blockchain

Fortunately my colleague Jillian Godsil had an interview with the president of SCML Dr Edmundo Martinho and can therefore provide us with background information, further contexts and how all this came into play when Portugal's largest charitable organization with its museum and church of São Roque put
"one of the most important religious collections in Catholic Europe" onchain.

Readers might ask by now: Which blockchain? And does NFTs and catholicism fit together at all?

What can be said with certainty is that the first NFT drop will take place today, December 1. SCML has created its own platform/marketplace Artentik for this purpose where it intends to further advance social inclusion, the rights of refugees, environmental sustainability and dignity. As Ethereum 2.0 is still not shipping they've probably done well to build their onchain relics on Polygon layer 2

What do you think about all this? Do you like baroque paintings?

Actually this opens up a huge topic where countries in Central Europe are not the epicenter of the world anymore. Cryptoinnovation in Europe happens at the fringes like Cyprus and Portugal, a hard pill to swallow for some

What kinds of functions can NFTs have? Other than tokenizing images. Can we put a secret memo inside an NFT yet, that only the owner can read? I also was thinking about how ownership of the catholic art works when NFTs are out there. I also wonder what the demand for images would have been like if they existed when the internet first started. Would you pay $1000 to download a gif over a dialup modem? People would think that was way too expensive. I am just throwing out ideas here. NFTs have lots of potential but what do they do? What can they do? And what could they do--
