Modern Situation After The Chaos

Hello there! @saydie here, manually playing Splinterlands everyday!

In my recent post, I talked about the situation in Wild Format now that the Chaos Legion set has moved there and Wild pass temporarily waived for this season so that players can experiment new synergies for Conclave Arcana and their old card, particularly the Bloodline Dominion mechanics on Archons.

My findings tells that not many people have played Wild to test their cards, and some players with huge Rebellion collection who play in modern has probably taken a break from playing and were botting in Wild. The number of Wild battles has also more than doubled due to the influx of players with only Chaos Legion deck.

This time, I will take a look at the situation in Modern Format, as this is the format in which I will play the majority of my battles.

Modern Format Situation

To make my findings as transparent as it can be, I played 2 accounts in modern. One is my main account, @saydie which plays between Diamond and Champion league with an assorted level of cards and an alternate account that I just recently made, @broken.hero which plays with my Bronze level Rebellion and Conclave Arcana Collection. This is so that I can experience playing both lower and higher leagues, know how long matchmaking takes, the total number of battles and see the rewards in Modern.

The New Modern League

Pre- Conclave Arcana, Modern league has been plague by max level Chaos Legion deck which can be rented very cheaply and there was also the CL soulbound rewards that also includes summoners so even at lower league, low level players can sometimes face with a max level deck if not soulbound summoners using Gladius cards. As a result this has become quite a terrible experience for lower league players. It has later become a lot easier with the addition of liquidity bots that push max level decks up in the rating. Now, with Conclave Arcana and Rebellion to be the only playable set in Modern, such encounters are less happens because players card collection has become more diverse.

However, this has lead for some rating inflation in the lower leagues were even a bronze level deck can reach diamond league as what happens to @broken.hero and is currently in the 4th spot in the silver leaderboard.

Meanwhile, my main account with just today has reached champion league which previously takes me about three days at the start of the season to achieve since it plays with varying level of cards. In fact, I don't have any of the 3 and 4 mana summoners at max level so I always lose when playing in little league or low mana cap battles.

With this, I can say that the new modern league currently lacks dolphin players. Players that will spent on a Silver or Gold level deck. It's like you play with bronze level deck and push as much as you can do in ratings since most max level decks will play in the highest league.

The New Modern Battles

While battles in Wild Format has more than doubled, Modern Format loses about 25-30% of it's daily battles. Part of this may be due to some of the players taking a break this season an bot their accounts in Wild as well as that the supply of modern cards are very scarce, particularly in the highest level so even renting cards in the market is difficult. Conclave Arcana packs may be available but some players might be holding back in opening them until they have enough supply of Midnight potions while others might choose not to rent them to prepare for the upcoming Conflicts.

In terms of matchmaking, I'd say that it was quicker in lower leagues and I am mostly facing against human players but like I say, many of those only have Bronze collection.

image.png

On the other hand, matchmaking in higher leagues takes longer, and if the match takes too long, you will most likely be matched into a liquidity bot. There is a trick though that I'm using to avoid matching against bots and that is by canceling the match before it reaches 45 seconds to look for another battle, but that in itself also adds more to the matchmaking time.

One thing I should add is that in the new format playing against higher level cards does not automatically means a loss. Sometimes, a good strategy using lower level cards can prevail even if there is a huge level gap against your opponent.

The New Modern Rewards

With Modern League losing significant amount of battles, there is an increase in ranked battle rewards. Previously, at 3.9K rating, I earned about 12 SPS at 9x multiplier but now, even if I'm still at 3.7K rating, I am getting about 19 SPS, given that I also used promo card there. The amount of Glint that I get also increases since like SPS, the Glint rewards received are also based on the number of players.

Meanwhile @broken.hero was earning about 4-5 SPS per battle but that is because it has lower SPS staked and does not have any guild bonus but it can easily earn 2 digit SPS if I just rent more SPS.

This is where I see a problem because, if bronze level decks managed to climb to higher leagues and earn rewards for that league, why will they decide to increase the level of their deck? Why would players invest to a max level deck which can cost thousands of dollars if they can earn close to the earnings of high league players by only spending a few hundred bucks?

Closing

And those were the current situation in Modern League after Chaos legion moved to wild. It has solved some issues that comes with the oversupply of Chaos Legion but also creates some potential problems as Bronze level players gets to climb in higher leagues. Perhaps a new wave of players will solve this but I'm not so sure since they still needs to be willing to invest in Silver or Gold level deck.

Thank you and see you at the next post.
