Unprotected: Time for the Assassins to Feast
![]()
Hello, fellow Splinterlands warriors!
I hope you’re all staying strong amid the wild swings of the crypto world—whether it’s BTC giving us heart attacks or HIVE that sometimes climbs sweetly but falls hard enough to make us shake our heads. But no matter what happens, we always have one battleground to pour our strategy and luck into: the Splinterlands arena.
And here we are again with this week’s Splinterlands challenge post. The battle theme I want to discuss is truly exciting because it opens the door for aggressive combos we rarely get to use: Unprotected. Yep, a favorite ruleset for ruthless hunters—because every monster enters the arena with zero armor. Add the Broken Arrows ruleset to the mix, which disables all ranged units, and what remains is pure magic and melee chaos.
With a 38 mana cap, I chose the Life element since it offers several efficient melee options. And from there, my killer combo began to take shape.
My Lineup
Archon: Prunda Undervesch
Monsters:
- Ulundin Overseer (main tank)
- Halfling Refugee
- Janni Rebel
- Vengeful Monk (Opportunity)
- Olivia of the Brook (Opportunity)
- Frigid Wolf
In Unprotected, I knew that Opportunity would be a deadly force. Without armor, low-HP monsters become instant snacks. That’s why I placed Vengeful Monk and Olivia of the Brook as my backline assassins.
The rest of the team was crafted to maximize melee damage, especially with Janni Rebel providing the Inspire buff. With limited mana, filling every slot became a huge advantage—every monster had a purpose.

Opponent’s Lineup
Archon: Thalgrimore
Monsters:
- Halfling Refugee (tank)
- Nim Guard Captain
- Ujurak Brave
- Little Sister
- Sorrow Harvester
- Arachne Weaver
From their formation, I could see the opponent was relying heavily on magic damage directed straight at my tank, with no alternative attack paths. Meanwhile, my team had the exact opposite advantage: two Opportunity executioners ready to shred their backline.
The Battle Begins
Round 1

Just as predicted, Little Sister was eliminated instantly. Her low HP made her the perfect first target for my Opportunity duo. Meanwhile, their magic attacks focused entirely on Ulundin Overseer, leaving my backline completely untouched.
Round 2

Next, Arachne Weaver fell victim to my assassination squad. Olivia of the Brook executed flawlessly. At this point, I was up by two monsters, and my tank still stood firm.
Round 3

Eventually, Ulundin Overseer went down—but that was all part of the plan. Because now it was time for the real counterattack. With Inspire from Janni Rebel, my melee power spiked, and the enemy’s Ujurak Brave couldn’t withstand the combined pressure, even though he still managed to weaken my magic with Silence.
Round 4

The enemy formation completely collapsed. Sorrow Harvester lacked the HP to survive, Nim Guard Captain couldn’t endure, and my final blows ended the match decisively.
A flawless victory for me.

What’s Interesting About This Match
- Unprotected is absolutely a playground for Opportunity monsters. Without armor, every weak target is fresh meat.
- My opponent seemed to overlook the danger of backline assassins—a fatal mistake in this ruleset.
- Janni Rebel’s Inspire was crucial. Even one additional point of melee damage can decide whether an enemy falls in one round.
This battle reminded me that understanding the ruleset is the most important part. It’s not just strong cards—it’s how those cards interact under specific conditions. New players can level up quickly by understanding how abilities like Opportunity, Inspire, and Silence shift the momentum in Unprotected battles.
Sometimes victory isn’t about raw power, but about who reads the battlefield faster.
Closing
This match is easily one of my favorites this week. The combination of prediction, strategy, and perfect composition made the result incredibly satisfying.
If you ever get the Unprotected ruleset, remember:
Use Opportunity. Target low-HP monsters. Destroy the backline. Control the tempo from the start.
See you in the next Splinterlands post! Keep fighting, and may your season rewards be even better!
