The Battle Begins Again — My First Time Entering Frontier Format in Splinterlands
Hello there, fellow mages, knights, and magical beast tamers in Splinterlands! 😄
Today I want to share something totally new — and honestly, it got me pretty excited to play again. It's called the Frontier Format. Maybe some of you have heard about it or even tried it out. But if you haven’t, sit tight. I’ll tell you all about my first dive into this new mode. And let me tell you... it’s a blast!
🎬 At First, I Had No Idea...
While scrolling through Hive, I saw an official Splinterlands post titled Welcome to the Frontier! and thought, “Wait, what? Another new mode?”
I clicked it out of curiosity and decided to give it a go. Turns out, Frontier Format is a mode where you can only use Foundation cards, all of which you can earn for FREE through Campaign Mode. No need to buy, no need to rent. Just time and strategy.
And that’s where the fun began.
🧭 So, What’s Frontier Format?
Frontier Format is a fresh battle mode in Splinterlands where:
✅ It’s 100% free to play
✅ Only Foundation cards (earned via Campaign Mode) are allowed
✅ It has its own energy and quest system, so it won’t mess with your Modern/Wild grind
✅ And best of all: you can sell, trade, or upgrade the cards you earn — they’re truly yours!
You can find this mode in the Battle menu, right beside Modern and Wild. Once you click it, you enter the Frontier arena and fight using only the Foundation set.
But before jumping in, you’ll need to complete Campaign Mode — let me walk you through that.
🗺️ Starting with the Campaign
To unlock Frontier battles, you have to finish the Campaign Mode, which has 11 chapters. At first, I thought it might be boring. But surprisingly... it was fun!
Each win gave me one or two new cards to add to my Foundation deck. It felt like opening mini packs after every fight. The thrill of “What card will I get next?” kept me going.
By the end of the campaign, I had a full deck ready. Not OP, but good enough to start in Bronze III. And the best part? There’s no crazy imbalance like in Modern or Wild. Everyone starts from scratch. No hundred-dollar cards. No Beta-era combos. It’s all about pure strategy.
As I kept playing Frontier, I noticed a few things that really set it apart from other formats.
Separate Energy & Daily Quests
Frontier uses its own energy system. So even if you’re out of energy in Modern, you can still play Frontier! Plus, it has three daily quests that reward chests filled with Foundation cards when you win five battles. Right now, I just need two more wins to claim my third card today.Cards You Actually Own
Every card you earn in Frontier is yours. You can sell it on the market, upgrade it, or use it in other formats. I already pulled a few Rares, and even got a Rare Gold! Not bad at all.Balanced Competition
Since everyone uses Foundation cards, matches are fairer. It’s brain vs. brain — not wallet vs. wallet.
What did I love? Everything felt fair and fresh.
No worrying about rental costs or expensive packs. Every win felt more genuine. Frontier is like a strategy gym for players of all levels.
But... there were a few downsides.
Since everyone uses the same card pool, some battles felt a bit repetitive. Also, because many people are farming Frontier, the market prices for Foundation cards are dropping. So if you're planning to sell, you’ll need to be patient.

And one more thing: the grind is real.
Yes, it's free, but getting strong cards takes time and many victories. Also, matchmaking can be slow — sometimes I wait up to 2 minutes for a battle to start, maybe because there aren’t enough players yet or bots haven’t arrived. In comparison, Modern and Wild are way faster. Hopefully, once Frontier gains more players, this issue will go away.
If you’re new to Splinterlands, Frontier is hands-down the best place to start.
You get a starter pack from Campaign Mode, jump straight into battles, and earn real rewards you can sell. It’s the most realistic way to grow without spending a dime.
And for us old-timers, Frontier feels like a “refresh zone.”
A break from the intense pace of Modern and Wild. A space to relearn and rebuild your strategies from the ground up.
💬 A Final Note from the Battlefield
If you haven’t tried Frontier yet, I really recommend it — even if you’re a seasoned veteran.
Try new strategies, face equally-matched opponents, and collect NFT cards you can actually trade. That’s what makes Frontier exciting.
And hey... who knows?
Maybe these small Foundation cards will grow into your next killer lineup for other modes. That’s the beauty of Splinterlands — there’s always room to grow, even when starting from the bottom.
See you in the Frontier, my friend.
And remember — in this realm, there are no heroes made of money, only those who master the art of battle.
