No, no one else reads GDPR consents notices either!?
You could have won a free bottle of wine worth £70 earlier on this year if you had only read the small print in the privacy policy on this website...
NB they have since updated their Privacy Policy because someone claimed this in May. However it took a good couple of months for ANYONE to pay enough attention to the 'cookies' notice to write in and claim the bottle of wine.
The lucky chancer received a 201/14 bottle of Chateau de Sales, Pomerot, which apparently retails at around £70!
The guy who came up with this scheme was Dan Neidle, founder of the natily named 'Tax Policy Associates' who provide tax policy advice to the public and private sector and partner with journalists to better educate people about tax issues in the UK and worldwide!
Clever Marketing and a Bit of Fun...
I came across this because it made a nice soundbite in The Week, and it struck me as a genious piece of marketing from what I think is basically a one man band (TPA only has one person in it's 'about' page).
And £70 for making national news is defo worth all of the extra clicks TPA are gonna get. I've already instructed my brain thing to mull over similar schemes for my own blog!
Tax Policy... Boring but Important!
NB this is actually a great website, in which Dan goes into a range of tax issues relevant to ordinary people inspired by recent news articles....
I think many many more of us ought to be paying attention to tax justice issues, I say this for two main reasons...
- Firstly, there is no single policy area that is going to affect your quality of more than the amount of tax you are obliged to pay! So knowing about this is crucial.
- Secondly, so many Tories and Corporations are masters at using the limits of tax law to avoid and evade tax, it's REALLY full of grey areas and open to interpretations, such as how blatantly you underpaid your tax, the degree to which can mean the difference between no fine at all and a jail term!
Final Thoughts...
I love little stumbles like this, someone's passion project, side hustle if you like, that's focused and interesting.
I recommend checking out the site!

This is a funny story, and I believe that the majority of the time people don't read the fine print or the Terms of Service.
Practically no one I think!
By the way...I believe you reside in Portugal, I hear it's a favorite destination for Expats.
I assume you like it there. DId you write a Pros and Cons post about living there?
Just curious...
I did move there, but I came back to the UK as I couldn't learn the language, that was almost two years ago now! Happier in the UK!
Sorry to hear that Portugal didn''t work out for you. But glad to hear your happy in the UK.
Hows the. crypto regulation there? Friendly? Antagonistic? Neutral?
Agnostic I'd say!
One of the biggest issues with taxation in the UK is it's deliberate over-complexity.
New tax regulations can come from Acts of Parliament, statutory instruments, HMRC regulations, and precedent from first and second tier tribunals. It's reckoned that the volume of new rules arrives faster than any single person could read them. Much of it is poorly written and full of loopholes.
It's also notable that HMRC's brief appears to have changed (without, as far as I know, any announcement) from "collect the correct amount of tax from each person" to "collect as much tax as possible".
If you are well connected and rich enough, you can get away with paying a lot less tax than the ordinary person !
I concur - so many self- employed I've spoken to have tax tales of woe!
Hehehe big bro for real you're absolutely right. It's funny how we skip through those consent forms. But this wine scheme is pure genius bro. Makes me really wonder what else I'm missing out on.
what an interesting idea
I wonder how many other companies will start implementing Easter eggs like that, should boost engagement if it catches on
Maybe it's worth reading some!
I always love he EU for dumb rules and laws. This is one of them. Of which even if you click reject the site still works fine and collects the data lol
Probably true!
