If gold never failed as a currency, why did fiat become the standard?

Gold hasn't failed as a form of money
Rather, countries failed to honor obligations to convert their currency into gold because gold's supply is limited

That suggests bitcoin is unlikely to succeed, since its fixed supply would be even more restrictive than gold
