Tribal Warfare: Nether Edition. Nether Neither Good or Bad with 9 Wins

A weekly recap of my Mythic Weekend Ranked experience, this time doing a challenge of using all the different tribes. Prior to this, I’ve done two challenges so far, first a Free-To-Play (F2P) Gauntlet with all the Gods to show that they can all compete and get Legendary packs, and second I did another Gauntlet using only Welcome and Core Cards.
Zombies are still ok! Second tribe in this series to get 50% winrate or higher, but unfortunately just 1 short of a Legendary Pack with 9 wins. There were some close games for sure, but I got hard-countered by Deception which turned out to be the majority of my opponents. I know I sound like a broken record but I feel like this deck could definitely get to 10. I feel like I’ve just been on the bad end of meta changes this series haha.

Weekend | 24 | 25 | 26 | 27 | 28 | 29 | 30 | 31 |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Tribe | Atlantean | Amazon | Anubian | Aether | Guild | Olympian | Mystic | Nether |
God | Magic | Nature | Death | Magic | Deception | Light | Magic | Death |
Wins | 12* | 11* | 6 | 7 | 8 | 10 | 8 | 9 |
Prize (USD) | $16.5 | $14.5 | $12 | $14.5 | $16.5 | $27.5 | $16.5 | $21.50 |
*Weeks 24 and 25 were out of 25 games; it changed to 18 games starting Weekend 26
Here’s the deck that I used, costing 0.0207 ETH or ~$33.

Well it seems like Light has disappeared and Deception took its spot, and not sure where Nature was but maybe it was just my (bad) luck with matchups. The problem is that Deception HARD counters Zombies, as they can Bound By Her Will a Cursed Obelisk and Counterfeit your Zombie Wand. It’s not just straight up destroying it but they’re taking control of it, just a double whammy counter. Umbra Arrow is good against your Voracious Field as well, not to mention a Rapture Dance to your probably wide board if you can get that far. I did well against other Gods, but was 2-5 against Deception, and Magic could be ok with more games (the only God I used Soul Burn instead of Blood Ritual against). Didn’t play against any War, not sure how it’d fare against Relic War since there’s no frontlines in the deck but good favor gain and leech.

Strengths
-Decent card draw options
-Lots of value (and sustain through leech) if you can keep your Zombie Generators on board
-Great early game creatures, allowing for frenzy with the better God Power (Blood Ritual)
-Decent value/finishers in the 5-7 mana range
Weaknesses
-Draw and tribe synergy tied to one card (Netherswarm Lord)
-Can be countered hard by relic/low attack hate (Deception and Light)
-Board can be crowded with low attack creatures, may have a hard time against Armor or AOE
Notable Cards
Netherborne Binder is probably the best neutral 1-drop, at least for Mid or Control decks as Aggro may not want to heal your opponent. Sometimes when I play against Control decks I don’t play it in my hand if I’m trying to Soul Burn them down. Necroscepter is obviously still strong, providing infinite value and favor control, as long as it’s not removed which is not that hard as it only has 1 durability. It’s better than Obelisk though as it doesn’t crowd your board as much and provides that favor control. Netherswarm Lord is the MVP, especially if you can keep even one Nether on board; getting that card draw AND buff is huge. Vampiric Skull is a decent body that provides good value, especially if you can bring back a Cursed Obelisk or even a Cruel Overseer if you’re under 15 HP.
Notable Cards Not In My Deck
Fickle Cambion and Faithbreaker are great with Soul Burn, but I believe Blood Ritual is the way to go especially with a Midrange deck. They can be great with a more aggro oriented approach though. That Which Aches ($96) is sometimes used as a Win Condition in Board Wipe Death decks that aren’t as popular anymore, but another means of providing infinite value as well as anti-fatigue.
Other Gods
Other than Light which has 42(!) God-specific Nether, Light has 14, Magic has 5, War has 3, and Nature has 1. Deception has some aggressive Nether but the most famous would be Witherfingers which is more Mid/Control.

Seems like ages ago when I played a Structure Magic deck for my F2P series but it’s coming back! With the stricter conditions here though it might be harder to win at the top end (City Planner gets a pass as it summons 2 Structures, and Diligent/Aggravated Architect as well obviously). We’ll see what happens! I actually have no clue what the meta would be like next weekend as I got blindsided by Deception this last weekend haha.

Got a decent Structure that I’ll be using in my deck next week, so that’s nice. Other than that, nothing special.

Yea, deception decks these days are a nightmare. They are going to draw counterfeit at some point. They are going to steal your obelisk at some point. A 2/2 zombie is perfect for umber arrow. etc. It's a shame you ran into so many, or you'd have done much better!
Let's talk Cruel Overseer, though. Not sure he fits in this deck, as a major goal is life steal to keep you high on health. He becomes more like a vanilla 3/4 with a low chance of upside. Cambion, on the other hand, would take advantage of your Firespreader, Chimera, and RoD. Not to mention soul burn.
Which brings me to ask how much mileage you are getting out of ritual? I have a few nether decks like this - they all run soul burn. Even one that tops out with Takhat at 7 mana. Necroscepter and obelisk are begging for that GP.
Overall, nice job!
True, maybe Cambion would've been better, but Overseer has a 3/4 with an upside which is always good to me. Also I wanted to play with cards that aren't seen that much these days.
I've always preferred Blood Ritual because in Midrange it's good to control the board for Zombies and this helps with that; having zombies do some chip damage then using it as removal, or getting rid of pesky Light Echos with a GP even if Protected is great. When you have control (or when it's even) you get Frenzy anyways from attacking their God. Even if you're ahead of board and your board is too crowded with Zombies you can remove your own if you need to play something else.
An aggro version with Soul Burn and Cambion/Faithbreaker and a lower curve does seem fun though.
