Tribal Warfare: Atlantean Edition. The Pacificeans might’ve done better, 12 Wins

A weekly recap of my Mythic Weekend Ranked experience, this time doing a challenge of using all the different tribes. This is my first weekend doing this challenge. I’ve done two challenges so far, first a Free-To-Play (F2P) Gauntlet with all the Gods to show that they can all compete and get Legendary packs, and second I did another Gauntlet using only Welcome and Core Cards.
Well here it is, the new series! As I’ve stated in the WelCore summary, I think I’ve shown that it’s possible to complete in Mythic with budget decks now with my first two challenges. This time I want to have some fun deckbuilding with the different tribes that are in the game. A lot of them will be off-meta, but some of them are staples in the current game, like Wild, Guild, and Anubians. I’ll try to limit myself to only creatures of the tribe I’m targeting, plus non-tribe ones, but there may be some tribes that don’t have enough options for me to do so. Finally, most of the decks will be less than $50, but it’s not that I’m trying to be budget here, it’s just that there’s so many tribes and I have to save some GODs to build all these decks haha so I can’t just throw it all into one. On that note, if anyone wants to help out, message me! I’ll just borrow the cards for the weekend (or even just a day) and give them back to you right after.
I started off with Atlantean because, well, it starts with an A haha. There was also a little bit of support from the new expansion as well as the Core Refresh. It was a pretty fun deck, and some of the pieces work really well together, but alas without much value generating cards it fell a little short. 12 Wins isn’t too bad though.

Weekend | 24 |
---|---|
Tribe | Atlantean |
God | Magic |
Wins | 12 |
Prize (USD) | $16.5 |
Here’s the deck that I used, costing 0.0155 ETH or ~$27.

First time playing more Deception than any other God! Sadly, that is a bad matchup for Atlantean. This tribe doesn’t have enough buffs to deal with all the strength stealing, and they have removal that goes through Ward, like the creature stealing spells and burn. It held its own against Nature, and not surprisingly, I was 100% against Magic, as the Ward+Protected and a little anti-spell was too much to handle for them. I think if the meta was more Magic heavy like the last few weeks, this deck could’ve gotten to 15 wins.

Strengths
-Board wide Ward from Phase Touched Golem is pretty sweet
-Some snowballing potential with Rolling Watcher, especially if you can apply Ward and Protect
-Good decently stated mid/late (5+ mana) creatures
-Anti-spell hate with Crystalseer Acolyte buffing
Weaknesses
-No card draw or value generation
-Midgame (3-4 mana) creatures lacking in stats
-No blitz or damage roars until late game
Notable Cards
Rolling Watcher may be under-stated for a couple of turns, but if it gets… rolling, it will be amazing. I’ve won a couple of games just because of it, and being able to apply Protect and Ward to it with the 3 mana cards is sweet! Speaking of, Ward spreading from Phase Touched Golem is amazing against Magic, and decent against other Gods as well. I’ve actually never seen Crush Construct ever before I started this challenge haha but it’s pretty nice for a large threat; after playing and loving Green Giant I know a lot of decks have issues with big dudes. Yes it has a downside but rarely does it affect the outcome of the game.
Notable Cards Not In My Deck
Boost Walker is a pretty sweet card, and in enables the next card as well. However, it was a bit too much for me ($55). Spiral Golem has insane stats for a 6-drop, with the caveat that it attacks a random creature at the start of your turn. It’s not bad against a creature based opponent, but what it lacks is the ability to attack their God, which is what Boost Walker would’ve solved with the twinstrike. Archimedes Mirror ($30) is a wonderful Control Magic tool, but it wouldn’t fit into my current deck which leans towards Aggro.
Other Gods
Other than Magic which has 11 God-specific Atlanteans, Deception has 4, and Death has 2. The Deception ones are pretty interesting for an Aggro deck, as Shade Walker was a Hidden Aggro staple before and Smoke Bomb looks like it can keep your creatures hidden. Thaumnetic Golem seems like a decent buffer as well for an all-Atlantean deck, plus it has hidden as well! I actually made a Deception deck but I think it might be better to not go full Atlantean with them. There’s too many tribes to go through so I told myself I’ll just do one God for each tribe for now.

Next week I think I’ll be going with more A’s, this time Amazon! They definitely got some love in Core Refresh, but I think they’re a little lacking now especially after the Arkmonian Onslaught nerf. At least they still have some stat buffs to go against all those Deception strength stealers.

As you can see, I actually got a few Atlanteans here and that's another reason why I started with them. A couple of decent cards as well but nothing to write home about. Have you guys noticed more Shadow/Gold cards though for the new expansion??
Ignoring Boost Walker (cuz $$$), what are your thoughts on Beam Sentry? Given this was Magic Atlanteans, you've got serious potential for a Burn/Rush deck, so swapping in Blizzard Bolt and Epiphany could help ramp up the "clock" on your opponent.
With all the Protect/Ward you've got spreading around, this could play like an Aggro War deck with better face damage spells.

It's only 1 damage to their God, I don't think it's worth a slot. The burn spells could be a good idea, but you'll have to make slots for it. It's kinda how my WelCore Magic deck played out, which was pretty good against Control Magic, not sure how it'll fare against other Gods. More board presence was good against Nature so you don't get run over.
I'd probably drop Surpassing Blast and Manathirst Golem to apply more early game pressure with the face damage spells. Golem's only triggers are the damage spells, many of which are likely to be used before he hits the board. Makes me think Epiphany might be more effective in finishing games after an aggressive start?
Yea that might work, try it out!
I think you're the first person I've seen play with this archetype. Those 12 wins in mythic are an excellent result.
I would love to know how you do it, do you have a channel where you upload the matches?
Thanks! Yea I think I've only came across an Atlantean deck maybe once since I started playing; they have some decent synergy though and if you can get a couple of the Ward and/or Protected ones to stick it feels slightly oppressive.
Unfortunately I don't stream, but a couple of other people on Discord were asking too... maybe someday soon when I figure it out and have a more routine schedule on the weekends.
Very interesting mission.
Yes, ward isn't a big advantage against MJ Deception. 12 wins isn't too bad, maybe you should try later when Meta is different.
I wanted to try Atlantean Deception in winter (I was learning GU that time, exploring everything). I bought 2 Rolling Watchers and 1 Spiral Golem + Phased Touch Golem was neutral... Then, I realized the archetype was too expensive for me and I stopped the project.
I still have 2 Rolling Watchers in my collection. They are too cute to sell them :) Maybe one day, I'll try a Magic deck with Rolling Watchers, Undertow Rovers, Phase Golems + Oni Spellswords, Choralis and other good creatures from any tribe...
My last WR reward consisted of 25 MJ cards and I only had 1 shadow :(
Haha the Rolling Watchers are cute, and they won me a couple of games. They're Genesis too so not a bad investment, although I need to sell all the cards so I can buy the next tribe. Atlantean Deception looks interesting, if you can get the Hidden guys to stick it'll be great, but I guess that's why they moved Phased Touch Golem to Magic so you don't have a bunch of hidden golems gaining strength each round!
Wait, so you nabbed a set of Atlanteans, but you're already gonna dump 'em back in the ocean? Poor guys never stood a chance. . .

Haha yea if only I had the funds to keep them all... some of them are Genesis too which could be good investments. But alas, the many other tribes call!
