Koi Fish (Mermay)

Last week we started the Mermay challenge and for the third year I decided to release my own list of themes for all those drawing enthusiasts and artists who enjoy creating fantasy art.

The theme for the first week was the Koi Fish, an emblematic symbol of Asian culture, present in Feng Shui art, tattoo and oriental-inspired drawing with an undertone of empowerment and motivation.

Mythology has it that the Koi Fish swam against the current and up a waterfall until it reached its destination. Because of his persistence in overcoming obstacles and his ability to achieve the goal he was rewarded by the gods. "Legend has it that fish that managed to swim upstream to reach a waterfall and climb it, upon arrival as a reward for their effort were transformed into dragons, which is why they say that Koi carp look so much like dragons." 1

The Koi Fish in particular has a very special meaning to me. There was a time in my life of much difficulty and turbulence when I was drawing koi fish without knowing its meaning. At that time I took two actions that would change my life for the better. The first was to take a Mindfulness training with Dr. Elsy Mata Marcano and the second was to reconnect with my family origins by traveling to my hometown of San Cristobal in Venezuela. I had a kind of spiritual awakening and a rebirth in which I was able to overcome obstacles and feel fuller and more fulfilled. Then digging around I discovered that the Koi Fish had been like an animal totem for me giving me its strength and persistence to climb that waterfall and become an empowered dragon.

This is why I wanted this year to be part of the theme of my #mermaytropical challenge as a way to honor them and the truth is that I was delighted with the works shared by the members of the Jovenes Pintores Academy inspired by this emblematic fish of Asian culture.

La semana pasada comenzamos el reto Mermay y por tercer año decidí lanzar mi propia lista de temas para todos aquellos entusiastas del dibujo y artistas que disfruten crear arte de fantasía.

El tema de la primera semana fue el Pez Koi, símbolo emblemático de la cultura asiática, presente en el arte del Feng Shui, en el tattoo y el dibujo de inspiración oriental con un trasfondo de empoderamiento y motivación.

Cuenta la mitología que el Pez Koi nadó a contracorriente y subió una cascada hasta llegar a su destino. Debido a su persistencia para superar obstáculos y su capacidad para lograr el objetivo fue premiado por los dioses. "La leyenda dice que los peces que conseguían nadar río arriba hasta alcanzar una cascada y subirla, al llegar como recompensa por su esfuerzo se transformaban en dragones, por eso dicen que las carpas Koi se parecen tanto a los dragones". 1

El Pez Koi en particular tiene un significado muy especial para mí. Hubo un momento de mi vida de mucha dificultad y turbulencia en el que dibujaba peces koi sin saber su significado. En ese momento realice dos acciones que cambiarían mi vida para bien. La primera de ellas fue realizar una formación Mindfulness con la doctora Elsy Mata Marcano y la segunda fue reencontrarme con mis orígenes familiares viajando a mi ciudad natal San Cristóbal en Venezuela. Tuve una especie de despertar espiritual y un renacimiento en el cual pude superar los obstáculos y sentirme más plena y realizada. Luego indagando descubrí que el Pez Koi había sido como un totem animal para mí dándome su fuerza y persistencia para subir esa cascada y convertirme en una dragona empoderada.

Es por esto que quise que este año fuera parte de la temática de mi reto #mermaytropical como una forma de honorarlos y la verdad quedé encantada con los trabajos que compartieron los integrantes de la academia Jóvenes Pintores inspirados en este emblemático pececito de la cultura asiática.
