Hola, querido hiver.

Hi, dear hiver.

Yesterday I participated in an event sponsored by Ecency Discord and hosted by @acgalarza. We carried out an exercise in which we each reflected on the values that we consider most important to us, those that move us inside and drive us to be better every day.

I was struck by how people from different parts of the world found common ground because we share values. I am also struck by the different interpretations we make of the same words, enriching their meanings and bringing new perspectives.

I find it necessary to participate in this kind of space, even if it is only from time to time. I am used to meditating on these questions, it is a fundamental part of these diaries. But I realise that it is not commonplace and that others find it very difficult. That doesn't make them worse or better than me, just different. And from these differences I learn from them and then apply them to my own behaviour. We help each other and we all take a step towards our personal development.

Stoic quote of the day

[We] do not neglect the care of anything else by renouncing the highest.

Epictetus.

My reflection

In the book Diary for Stoics by Ryan Holiday, the interpretation of this quote is that perfection is the enemy of action. Indeed, perfectionism limits us by the inability to get going.

In my particular case, I can differentiate between two situations: either I fail to start the tasks that would take me where I want to go, or once I have started them, I am unable to finish them. In the first case, I get lost in previous research, trying to imitate other people's methods and avoid mistakes. In the second case, I go round and round trying to optimise the results to the extreme.

In neither case do I make progress, because once again it is the fear of error that leads me to these black holes of time. To pretend to do everything perfectly is to end up doing nothing or that the results are impersonal, lacking the life that we imbue in what we do with passion.

And where does the fear of error come from? I know the origin well: the need for approval from others in order to feel satisfied with what I do. It is a serious mistake, I know. Part of my work to combat it is these daily writings. It carries with it a perspective of harmful absolutes, as are all extremes. Fear of failure can blind me to what I do do well. The small details that make my mark may be considered imperfections, but they are where my soul resides.

For some time now, I have been concentrating on progress, on tiny but continuous improvement over time. The surprise is that progress is much faster when you lay simple foundations, which by repetition you assimilate without too much effort. It is then that you build on them for your higher achievements, starting the pattern all over again. Thus, rung by rung, your ladder of goals and satisfaction grows.

Logbook of the day

Hi my dear friend.. hope you're well. I usually zoom right into your "reflection", as I find each one deeply thought provoking and insightful. I've grown to truly appreciate your writing as a whole.

I can relate to the latter point raised, where I usually try and "optimize" as well - though that's what allows me to share something I'm personally content with. That being said, I've certainly become more comfortable with the odd mistake (in grammar or choice of words).. it kinda helps to humble me somewhat. I completely understand what you're saying with regards to imperfections as well. I do think there's a beauty in them. As to your point, a window to the soul.

Thanks for your wonderful post. Keep well. Hugz.

Oh, what a pleasure it is to receive comments like this, which turn my firing of thoughts into constructive dialogue and learning.

Finding beauty in imperfections, what a great point! It's true, perfect is boring, there is nothing that stands out, neither good nor bad. Monotony. Brilliant!

Thank you so much for your valuable time reading and commenting. ❤️
