The State of Healthcare in Lagos Nigeria | A Call to Action

I'm writing this article with a heavy heart, compelled by a recent experience that left me shaken. A close friend of mine had a terrifying encounter with the healthcare system in Lagos, and it could have ended in tragedy. The incident has left me frustrated and concerned about the state of healthcare in our city.

My friend had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for days, and we rushed him to a reputable hospital in Lagos. The initial diagnosis was appendicitis, and surgery was recommended. Sounds straightforward, right? But what followed was a series of events that made me question the competence and preparedness of our healthcare system.

The hospital was ill equipped to handle the situation. Basic diagnostic tests were delayed, and the doctors seemed uncertain about the best course of action. My friend's condition worsened, and we had to plead with the medical staff to take action. It was like watching a ticking time bomb, powerless to stop the impending disaster.

The surgery was finally performed, but not without complications. My friend's appendix had ruptured, and he was lucky to have made it out alive. The aftermath was chaotic, with inadequate post-operative care and a lack of clear communication from the medical team.

What struck me most was the apparent lack of preparedness and expertise. The hospital seemed overwhelmed, and the staff appeared understaffed and undertrained. It was a harrowing experience that left my friend and our family traumatized.

This incident is not an isolated case. I've heard numerous stories from friends, family, and acquaintances about subpar healthcare experiences in Lagos. The city's healthcare system is struggling to cope with the demands of a growing population, and it's the patients who suffer.

The problems are multifaceted. There's a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of investment in healthcare facilities. The situation is further complicated by bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption.

It's not all doom and gloom, however. There are pockets of excellence in Lagos' healthcare system, with dedicated professionals and well equipped facilities. But these are often overshadowed by the systemic problems that plague the city.

So, what's the solution? Firstly, the government needs to prioritize healthcare, investing in infrastructure and staffing. This includes training more healthcare professionals and providing them with the resources they need to deliver quality care.

Secondly, hospitals and healthcare facilities need to be held accountable for their performance. This means implementing robust quality control measures, monitoring patient outcomes, and addressing complaints effectively.

Lastly, citizens need to demand better healthcare. We need to hold our leaders accountable, advocate for policy changes, and support initiatives that promote quality healthcare.

My friend's experience was a wake-up call. It highlighted the cracks in our healthcare system and the need for urgent reform. I'm not asking for much, I just want to know that when I or my loved ones need medical care, we'll receive the best possible treatment. Is that too much to ask?

The state of healthcare in Lagos is a ticking time bomb. If we don't take action, we'll continue to witness preventable tragedies and subpar care. It's time for change. Let's work together to create a healthcare system that truly cares for its citizens.

What a shame. Funnily enough I noticed there were two Nigerians at the clinic I visited in Australia where I live today.

I enjoy reading. The government really needs to sit up and look into the activities in health centers and the Nonchalant attitudes of Healthcare workers 🙄 😒, it is so annoying 😑

The healthcare system over here is trash, let's not even talk about the healthcare workers, most of them are rude and nonchalant.

I'm glad you enjoyed reading through ❤️.

It actually depends on the type of government we have and that's why it is happening the way it is .
