Splinterlands Social Media Challenge - Playing Magic in Counterspell

Hello everyone! This is my first entry for this week's Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. Today, I'm sharing a battle of mine in Rebellion Silver tournament.

I fought an interesting battle in a tournament. In this game, I played a magic team with the Counterspell rule set. Was it a genius move or just dumb? It is undoubtedly a bold strategy! Usually, when playing in the Counterspell, Briar Patch, or Fire & Regret, it's good not to use the type of attack that is getting countered unless those units have Deflect. However, it can sometimes be effective, especially because the opponent is not likely to expect it. Furthermore, this game also has the Keep Your Distance rule set, removing melee units from the picture. The final rule set was Equalizer, which helped a lot in this strategy, making sure my units wouldn't die too fast from the damage they were taking back.

This game had the following rule sets: Keep Your Distance, Counterspell, and Equalizer. The mana cap was 32, with only Earth, Death, and Dragon available. I picked Lorkus as my summoner and placed Dark Arborist in front. I followed it up with Ujurak Elder and the Weapon Training combination of Grimbardun Smith, Moxian Rebel, and Chaos Animator. I finished the team with the most important unit of all: Arachne Weaver. They opted for Risqruel Drath with Lurking Puffer as their first unit. The rest of their team consisted of ranged units: Blackmoor Jinx, Drybone Bowdog, Swell Spore Beast, Satha Toledo, and Gobson Sniper. They gave Impede and True Strike to Drybone Bowdog and Gobson Sniper. I gave Life Leech and Affliction to Grimbardun Smith and Arachne Weaver.

Ambush Round

The Bowdog dealt 3 damage to my Arborist.

Round 1

We traded attacks, and both our first units ended the round on a very low HP. They were also both stuck with Affliction. Arachne couldn't heal the Arboorist, but it healed Grimbardun Smith.

Round 2

Grimbardun Smith took several hits, going down to 1 HP, before it was healed back again. I finished their Puffer, and my Arborist died to the Magic Reflect. Without Silence, my team had much more firepower, and I was also able to take out their Jinx.

Round 3

Once again, Arachne was healing most of the damage and Bowdog was eliminated.

Rounds 4, 5, and 6

Their firepower was getting weaker every round. They only had 2 attackers left, so the writing was on the wall. I killed one of their units per round, finishing the game by round 6.

After reviewing the game, it's safe to say that it was a bold strategy, but the conditions were there for it to work. I only have a level 1 Risqruel Drath, so any strategy involving this summoner would likely lose the mirror. Keep your Distance meant I didn't have the option of going melee, which is why I went with Lorkus and magic. The Equalizer made sure my low HP units wouldn't kill themselves very quickly and that the heals from Arachne Weaver, the MVP, were much more effective. Last but not least, this was a tournament game. If it was ranked, they would have been able to see my team before choosing the Tactics. If they could, they would probably opt for Taunt and Redemption on my Weaver, which I don't think I could have beaten.
