Digital Painting: Southsea, Portsmouth

avatar

Have you ever had a go at converting a photo into a digital piece of art? I bet you have and if you haven't, here is a little introduction to how you can go about it.

You could of course use one of Adobe's products such as Lightroom or Photoshop but you don't have to. It also depends on which camera you used to take the photo, big camera (as I like to call mine) or your smartphone (which I carry all of the time).

In the case of this "painting" I used my iPhone 13 Pro Max whilst walking along the seafront at Southsea. The lighthouse in this picture stands on the western rampart of Southsea Castle.

The castle was built in 1544 and the Lighthouse was a later addition in 1828.

How did I create this image?

I used the app Oilist which has been around for a few years. You choose your image and then a style, there are many to choose from and I've had fun exploring them. You will find styles based on famous artists such as Monet, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Manet, Cezanne, Picasso and a whole load of others.

Once you've picked your artist, set him off with his easel, canvas and brushes. Watch him at work as your image builds up and keeps on building. Perhaps a video would do this more justice? In the meantime just imagine it!

Whilst your pocket artist is layering up his gouache, etching, splashing, scribbling away, you can introduce some chaos to the mix. You can influence the vibrancy of the image and other dynamics.

What's really cool is you can take snapshots throughout and then later choose your favourite versions.

So I ended up with this one, which has a nice inky feel with smudges along the edges, as if the artist licked the tip of their finger to create the effect. There is some clever AI stuff going on here.

It's a favourite of mine this app and if you fancy buying this as a NFT on the Hive blockchain, you soon will be able to. Take a look at my portfolio on Lensy follow me there to watch out for any updates I make.

I've not done much photo manipulation, but I have been past Southsea Castle recently. Apparently there is a brewery in there as I had some of their beers.

You may like something to go with the beer… that sounds really good, will look that up for a future trip down to Portsmouth 😀
