Splinterlands campaign mode.
Finally, a good onboarding experience for new users.
This has been one of the asks of the splinterlands team since the early days as we all know how tricky it can be to navigate web3 eco-systems without a lot of experience in the area.
And if splinterlands is to be a long term success then it needs to expand it's userbase and recruit ordinary gamers to swell our community.
The new campaign mode is a big step in the right direction helping new players to get a feel for the game and how to take their first few steps.
While doing so they will learn,
- About card stats.
- About the splinters.
- About abilities.
- How to select teams.
- How to battle.
- How to win prizes.
- How to navigate the game.
All vital parts of the splinterlands experience and all the while they will earn a few soulbound reward cards to get started.
I decided to try the campaign for myself and see how much it would help new players get into the game.
CH 1. Welcome to Waur Medge.
A quick intro to the game and to some of the terminology involved with playing.
CH . Card types.
You get to see some of the cards that you will be playing with and select your first team.
The campaign brings you on from here through the different splinters and abilities as you get familiar with the cards and picking teams and strategies to help you win each chapter of the training.
Each chapter teaches you a new skill for your battles ands adds to your knowledge of the game and it's strategies. All the way to the last chapter.
CH 11. Modifiers.
At this stage you are getting into the more detailed battles with multiple rulesets and various mana which add several layers of strategy to what would otherwise be a very simple game.
Overall I think that the idea is very well done. The rewards are a nice incentive but so small that they won't effect anybody who is already in the game while giving a leg up to new players wanting to try their luck in bronze.
Having tutorials is a smart move and one that echoes almost every other web2 game already out there. It can be very hard to start playing anything without a reference point but when you bring in the complexities involved in splinterlands and in crypto then some guidance is very important.
It also leaves lots of room to add more chapters into the campaign mode in the future and really get people thinking about their game.
These are the positive and practical steps that i love to see and that show the team is thinking in the right terms. Not just about technical development but in terms of users and retention. I think that they have been on a great roll these past few months and it would be great to see that translate into more users and more publicity.
As one of the longest standing and most successful web3 games out there it's a travesty that they don't get more recognition for all that they have built and pioneered.
I have given out about plenty changes that have been made over the years but i also like to think that i can show appreciation for things when they are going in the right direction too. Hopefully the latest card sales have given the team enough runway for another couple of years and they can focus on growth.
Try for yourself.
If you haven't played the game before then now is the best time to join. Today is much better than tomorrow and a lot better than later.
