Midnight Potions and the Fast-Adapting Economy of Splinterlands

As expected, the launch triggered a race. But not just to produce the potions—this quickly became a race to the bottom in terms of price.
In typical fashion, early producers flooded the market in hopes of capturing premium pricing while demand surged. But as more landowners reallocated their magical plots to Aura production, Midnight Potions became plentiful fast. Within hours, prices began to slide. While that may be disappointing to some, it’s also a powerful signal of how well the Splinterlands economy adapts.
Despite the early price compression, I believe there’s real long-term value in Midnight Potions. Right now, much of the market is still speculating. The true impact and scarcity of Black Foil cards—along with their utility and performance—have yet to be fully priced in. Once these cards start to hit the battlefield and the secondary markets, we’ll get a clearer picture of just how essential these potions are. That’s when pricing may start to climb again as utility drives demand.
For those of us who have been around long enough, it’s impossible not to recall the last time a new asset saw an early price spike—Vouchers. When they first launched, they hit insane levels around $20 per token. Many players chased that hype, and most paid the price. The Waka Spiritblade debacle is another prime example of how buying early doesn’t always mean buying smart.
But this time feels different.
This time, the drop in price doesn’t necessarily feel like a collapse—it feels like equilibrium trying to find itself. The Splinterlands economy is far more developed now. Land, liquidity pools, crafting mechanics, and multi-purpose tokens are all working in tandem to create a dynamic, functioning marketplace. The speed of adaptation around Midnight Potions is actually a sign of strength.
Yes, prices dropped. But the infrastructure is working, players are adjusting, and the market is doing its job.
These growing pains are expected as the ecosystem continues to evolve. What’s encouraging is how much more efficient and stable the responses have become. For me, that’s a sign that the foundation for long-term sustainability is being built—brick by brick, potion by potion.
Midnight Potions may not be printing profits today, but their real value is still brewing.

It's all about supply and demand right>?
Unless they produce more use cases for AURA I can't see midnight potions ever being worth more than gold potions. You are paying for a dice roll at the end of the day!
Agreed on Aura but I haven't done the math on the weight average of potions for BF vs GF which are adding to pack values... The demand will only come from packs first though...
I can't see the demand increasing now we're into main sale... I don't like the current use.... 200 Aura for a raffle ticket, that's anti people at our level, even, and we've got over $10K stacked, but chances are you buy a few of these and get fuck all.
I don't mind the Aura cost much but the DEC on top of the DEC we have to stake on land already is absurd...
Land aint' cheap, that is for sure!
I pulled out at 6c, it's easy enough to convert a land type again and I will when it's feasible.
I have not made any more but have continued to make Aura for inventory for the upcoming Pickle card. Will see how that goes before switching back to Research.
