I Guess I Still Got It! – Rediscovering the Fun in Splinterlands Tournaments

Every once in a while, the stars align just right in the world of gaming—and for me, that happened recently during a surprise entry into @bulldog1205’s streamed Splinterlands tournament.

It had been a long day, and I found myself just kicking back and relaxing when I noticed Bulldog was streaming. I’ve always appreciated his content and the energy he brings to the community, so I popped in to show some support. To my surprise, I noticed his tournament was about to start—with just a couple minutes left to join. Despite having stepped away from ranked play and tournaments for a couple of months (outside of my usual brawls), I figured—why not? It was only 1 DEC, after all. Nothing to lose, and maybe a little fun to gain.

What I didn’t expect was how much fun I was about to have.

This tournament used ghost cards, which means everyone had access to maxed-level cards, leveling the playing field in a way that always makes things exciting. While I suppose I had a bit of an edge thanks to having played with most of those cards extensively, the truth is—it had been a while. Most of my Wild cards are now assigned to land, and I had genuinely forgotten some of the old metas and lineups.

But like muscle memory, it slowly started to come back.

I found myself blending older, familiar team comps with some of the newer cards, and suddenly I was in the zone. Match after match, I was remembering what I loved about the game in its more competitive setting. It felt like a flashback to the good old days when @aftersound would host his weekend tournaments, where the focus wasn’t just on competition but also on community and fun.

And wouldn’t you know it? I started climbing the leaderboard.

I wasn’t expecting much—just a laid-back night supporting a content creator I enjoy. But somehow, I ended up at the top of the tournament, with a performance that even surprised me.

It turns out… I still got it.

More importantly, it reminded me of why I got into this game in the first place. The community-driven events, the strategic depth of battles, and the joy of competition. Hats off to @bulldog1205 and creators like him who keep the spark alive in the Splinterlands ecosystem. It’s those grassroots moments that bring the magic back.

Here’s to more of those nights—and maybe, just maybe, I’ll start jumping into tournaments again a bit more often.
