Market Friday Goes to the Movies

When was the last time you went to the movies?

We went to see the latest Spiderman movie at an IMAX 4D cinema and while the movie was instantly forgettable the eerie emptiness of the cinema had quite an impact on me.

This is the first time we had been to the movies since the lockdowns began two years ago. It was a sobering experience.

The cinema was basically empty except for a few staff and this got me thinking about the economics of this kind of business.

It had all the latest technology for your viewing experience including water jets that hit you in the face, mist appeared from the ceiling, the seats moved like some crazy roller coaster ride and all in all it was a sensory sensation.
It even sprayed scent!

You can turn off the effects system if you're feeling seasick! 😂

To run a cinema of this size must cost a small fortune but from my observation it is not pulling in the audience to survive.

It was a surreal experience to wander through this technological marvel in movie presentation with no one in the cinema to appreciate it?

It could be that public habits have changed and going to the movies is no longer on their list of fun things to do?

And then there's the cost.

Costs: £15.99 ($20) per ticket
£5 ($6:50) popcorn
£2:95 ($4) water

4 adults and 2 children total cost £144 ($195) Ouch!

Maybe the high prices have had an impact on cinema attendance?

With many new movies being premiered on streaming services for £20 ($25) and the convenience of watching movies from the comfort of your own home has led people to the same conclusion.

Save time and money and watch movies at home.

It's not the same experience for sure but with such a high price tag I think cinemas are finished?

What do you think?
Do you think going to the movies is a thing of the past?

Until Covid, I bought a theater pass that allowed you to go as many times a month as you wanted for $10 a month. This covered only one theater. If you wanted an unlimited one that covered 200 to 400 different theaters, it was $18 a month, so that was doable. Of course, at the prices of the IMAX there, I would go totally broke. I hope they don't go bankrupt, although I cannot see how they are still in business. Ours is not even open.

I haven't been to one in forever, but, just looking at your post makes me want to go again. I guess I didn't know I would miss it... and PS... my media room is not like their theater.

Thank you for being part of #MarketFriday and your shoutout!

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through by their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Hi Denise, yep I think covid changed almost everything. We used to go to the cinema quite regularly pre covid but that all went out of the window with the lockdowns.

We do have a huge TV at home and it's OK but for some movies the cinema is the only place to see them at their full potential.

This 4dx IMAX is like being on a ride at a theme park. It was pretty cool but after 10 minutes of being tossed around the novelty wore off lol

I spent a lot of the movie laughing at the way we were being thrown around and rained on. It was fun but don't think I'd do it again?

We do have those yearly movie passes here but they are more expensive than $10 a month.

To get value for money we'd have to see 3-4 movies a month! 💲💰😂👍

The only place I have seen those 4dx IMAXX is at Disney and a couple of other Amusement Parks, not something I would pay for on a regular basis. I got wet and jostled and it was fun, but, for only about 10 minutes. So sure, amusing, but, not for that long!

The movie passes are fairly inexpensive, but, I don't go to the movies a lot, as we have a media room with a big screen that usually satisfies me. But, totally agree, it will never take the place of the theater. Even though I don't go much, and even never now, I still like it. :)

I always favored at home viewing. I can make the popcorn the way I like it. I can stop the movie in the middle and make more popcorn if I want to. I get sore if I sit to long. I like to pause and get up for a stretch!

Yep. I think going to the movies is probably a relic of the past.

We have to travel to the cinema find a parking place and then get gouged on the tickets and snacks!

Sitting in your own lounge with fresh popcorn works for me too 😂👍

The 4dx IMAX experience was interesting but more of a gimmick than anything.
It could get very irritating very fast.

We went to the cinema over Xmas to see West Side Story. There were a fair few people in there. A big screen does make a difference and most of us cannot recreate that at home. I have only been 3 or 4 times during the pandemic, although I was not going very often before. I've not done the '4d' experience, but have been in the local IMAX screen. It can work out expensive. I'll probably catch the new Spider Man on streaming at some point.
