Mr. Deep : My Wise Inner Monster [NFT] [En/Esp]
My entry for #SIGNBATTLE contest (Monster vs Monster) -Info Here-
Hello, my dearest Hiver!
These days have been a bit strange for me, a bit exhausting, but at the same time exciting. I admit that they have not been my most creative days, as i have been mentally exhausted, attending to the responsibilities at home and since some time ago i adopted my uncle's cat, who has an insatiable hunger, a hellish meowing and is in urgent need of sterilization hahaha. In the middle of all my mess i decided to give myself a Christmas (or Halloween) present in advance; i bought a graphic tablet to work much better, i think this new "toy" relieved me a little bit of my stress. So i took advantage of this particular and interesting contest to drain my stress.
Inspiration
I confess that i'm not into drawing monsters, although i'm a super fan of them. I admire this ability to create grotesque or simply strange creatures that somehow bring out that "dark" side of us, although i have seen very cute monsters. I spent days thinking about what the heck to do, in my mind there was like a kind of very dense fog, the only thing in my mental chaos was this legendary creature that fascinates me, the fabulous Kraken. I am a lover of sea creatures and this particular monster was perfect.
As many of you know i am not a design planner. I like everything to be very intuitive, magical, because i like my creations to be like those tests that psychologists do, where you start drawing without understanding or pretending anything until suddenly, all that underworld that we carry inside comes to light. I love that technique and effect, because i am always amazed by the final result.
Creative Process
For this design i wanted it to be a mix between illustration and photo manipulation, as i really enjoy this process of transforming photographs. The software used was Adobe Photoshop CC.
Keeping in mind that the main idea would be my beloved Kraken, i went to sail the seas of Pexels.com. I like to look at random images, to clear my mind, to let my senses start that process of creating a kind of puzzle, many times i don't even use the pile of photos i usually keep.
This time i chose 3 photos:.
The first 2 to create my strange monster head: since i was a child i have been fascinated by masks so i wanted to add this feature to my monster.
The 3rd one i used to create textures, background and effects.
Reference 1 / Reference 2 / Reference 3
Then i moved on to the illustration part, once i had my flying "head" a little bit organized, i started to sketch and outline my Kraken, i really didn't expect this creature to be more like the haunted hair of my mystic head, like a new version of Medusa, but without snakes, this one has Kraken tentacles and it's interesting that one of the special characteristics of these awesome beings, is that they can regenerate their lost limbs, so this "Medusa" will never lose her hair.
To give shape and personality to my ghostly and psychic Kraken, i used textured brushes, i didn't want to use those brushes completely smooth and neat, i wanted it to have a rustic look, that texture like when we use graphite or charcoal.
And this was the whole procedure summarized for this somewhat disturbed looking creature or i don't know exactly what it will transmit to others when they look at it. But i love the little details i added at the end, no doubt when i made those red vines it was very relaxing, that's why i'm addicted to add patterns with miniature details, because sometimes i usually get very anxious while designing and this helps me to calm it down.
This monster definitely has a great psychological and symbolic charge for me. It is my Arcane monster.
With nothing more to say, I'll say goodbye until next time...hope you have a super great week! :)

Mr. Deep: Mi Sabio Monstruo Interior [NFT]

This turned out really nice. Glad to hear you got a new toy and hopefully things settle down a bit. If i may ask, which graphic tablet did you get, and was it affordable? I have been considering getting one myself. Thanks for sharing your process and workflow. I hope the creativity comes back like a tsunami! Cheers
Thanks!!! I bought a Huion pen tablet (HS611 specifically, it's a big one by the way XD).This brand is super affordable, at least in non Latin American countries, hahaha unfortunately i'm from Venezuela; but i think you are lucky. Digital arts purists prefer Wacom but that was out of my budget, at least the "intuos pro" which is the one i like from that brand. But i have to confess i had a bad experience with a wacom, maybe because of its surface or i don't know, but i felt weird and stupid while trying to draw something. With this one i bought it is super smooth and i like that texture but i saw in reviews that the cheaper ones are not like that, maybe because the material is low quality. I chose my tablet after a really obsessive research and begging not to repeat that bad experience 😆 Cheers!!!
That's awesome. I was hoping you had done my obsessive research for me and i am not disappointed! hahaha I will have to check that one out and look into it for sure. I have a hard time wanting to transition from pen/pencil on paper to digital drawing. I hope your experience this time is much better around. Keep up the great art and looking forward to seeing some of your new creations! Take care and thanks for such a thoughtful and detailed response. =)
