This post is an entry to ONEUP's NFT Gaming Review Challenge.

Game Overview

Gods Unchained is, according to their official website, a "free-to-play tactical card game" that, through NFTs, "gives players true ownership of their in-game items". The players "must strategically outsmart their opponents by building decks that are able to combat a wide variety of tactics"

Gods Unchained is one of the most well-known NFTs games around; the game is pretty old for the market standards (it was launched in 2018) and is based on the Ethereum Blockchain.

If you're used to other Collectible Card Games (CCG) like Magic the Gathering, Hearthstone or Legends of Runeterra, you'll have an easy time on Gods Unchained. All these games are very similar in the sense that you have to build your deck (chosing the cards that you'll be playing that match) and, then, you'll be controlling your cards during the match in order to outsmart your enemy and win the game.

It's natural to compare Gods Unchained with the most popular NFT-based CCG around, Splinterlands.

In a very simple manner, Gods Unchained is to Splinterlands what a PC Game is to a Mobile Game.

What I want to say is: Gods Unchained, much like a PC Game, is a very complex game. The matches takes a long time to end, you'll have hundreds of choices in every match (what card you'll play from your hand, which enemies you'll attack), etc.

In the other hand, Splinterlands is like a Mobile Game. It's a fast game (you can play a match in just a few seconds), lots of things are instantly resolved without played interactiong (you just chose the order of your cards, and the rest is automated).

This isn't bad or good for either games. After all, there are players that want to play a slow, complex game; and there are other players that want to play a fast, simpler game. Also, there are players that sometimes want to play a complex game, and other times a faster game.

I like to play EVE Online and Age of Empires when I'm at my PC, but I also like Candy Crush when I'm on my smartphone. So there is no "better" or "worse" between Gods Unchained and Splinterlands: they're both different games with very different ideas of gameplay, and both are good in their own sense.

Cost of Entry: Free!!

You can start playing Gods Unchained 100% free.

According to their FAQ, "all new players are given 70 individual cardsthat make up the Welcome Set for free. You can, then, unlock packs and cards just by playing the game. Leveling up by winning (or losing) in Ranked mode will unlock card packs"

Obviously, if you're willing to spend some money, you can jump start your career by purchasing some good, strong cards for your deck. But that's up to the player; if you want to stay 100% free, you'll be able to play the game, enjoy it, and grind your cards in-game.

Personal Review

It's very difficult to me to analyze a game like Gods Unchained, because I've been a Magic the Gathering player for, at least, the last 15 years. This means that I love Collectible Card Games, I've been a long-time fan of the genre, and that I'll end up liking the game anyway.

But the truth is that Gods Unchained is a great game in a technical sense: the software is fast to load and runs nice even on older machines; the graphics and animations are superb; the cards are balanced and there's no "unique strategy that beat all others"; there is a huge active community playing the game; there is also an active competitive scene with regular tournaments. Also, if you're into roleplaying, the lore is incredibly interesting.

The truth is that Gods Unchained is one of the most polished NFT Games currently available, much like Axie Infinity and Splinterlands. When you think about it, the huge majority of the blockchain games are very early in development and can barely be called a "game" as they're not even functional; Gods Unchained, in the other hand, is a fully-working, fun game to learn and play.

I've played Gods Unchained in the past and stopped due lack of time. Unfortunately, I'm with lots of real-life obligations that aren't allowing me to enjoy complex games or even dedicate a long time to a gaming session. But playing it was a very enjoyable experience, and I was also able to profit a bit when I sold some of the cards I was able to pull out😋

Other Informations

State of Development

Gods Unchained is currently on the 0.4 Beta Version.

But, although it is oficially still in Beta, it is already a full-fledged game: you can jump in right now, download the game, and play it as if it was already finished.

Georestrictions

There is no restrictions, and players all across the world are welcome to the game.

Devices

In order to play Gods Unchained, you have to download the software on Windows or MacOS. So, unfortunately, there's no way to play the game through smartphones, tablets or Linux (I mean, Linux users can always find a way by emulating Windows on their machines!)

I also didn't spent anything on GU; in the other hand, I played it for a while when it launched, so I was able to earn some good cards that, after a while, were kinda valuable.

Gods Unchained is currently the NFT game that I actually enjoy the most in terms of play at the moment. I see it doing incredibly well in the future.

One thing you might want to consider adding is their tokenomics:
You did mention it is on Ethereum but didn't really talk about Immutable X, $GODS etc. For those that don't know, Ethereum has insane fees to transfer tokens between users. Currently the fees are over $100. This means that even if you wanted to transfer just $5 it would cost $100+ to do so. To combat this since it is a really major problem for a game that incentivizes low value high volume trades, they developed a layer 2 market which is currently feeless.

You also could add their current play2earn promotion.

I do agree with you: in terms of a fully-fledged, working game, Gods Unchained is almost alone currently on the market.

I, indeed, didn't delved too much into the tokenomics; the layer 2 market was a great idea to circumvent the crazy Ethereum gas fees. I tried to make this post as an introduction for the game, and not a huge bible that no one would actually read. I'll surely post more about GU in the future, delving into specific aspects of it (basic gameplay strategies, tokenomics, ecosystem, etc.)

Thanks for your support!

Unfortunately, no; Gods Unchained is based on their own client, and you have to download it in order to play.

Isn't this game dead after market changes? 🙄

It's definitely not dead; it indeed has less players than before. But $GODS marketcap is still considerably larger than $SPS itself, so that's far from "dead".
