Phlegmunculus: Wanted Dead or Alive
Introduction
In a game where damage and speed are often the winning factor, Phlegmunculus wins by dying, being annoying, unpredictable and persistent. He attacks and damages the opponents team while alive and leaves them poisone even after his death. This makes him a unit that’s not only fun to play but also dangerous in ways most opponents won’t expect.

Having both melee and ranged attacks lets Phlegmunculus deal damage no matter where he’s placed. It doubles his overall damage each round and can add a lot of unexpected strong combos even if the damage he has is very low.
Poison Burst is very strong because it punishes enemies even after Phlegmunculus dies spreading poison across their lineup. Poison Burst can poison up to three opponents at a time and this can be a huge advantage since Poison can kill your enemies without you lifting a hand.

Close Range: [Attack Modifier] This ranged monster can attack while in 1st position.

Poison Burst: [Negative Status] When this monster dies, 100% chance to apply Poisoned status to attacker and 50% chance to apply Poisoned status to monsters adjacent to attacker. Monsters with Poisoned status lose 2 health at the beginning of each round.

![]() Aim True |
All monsters cannot miss their attacks: Because it makes all attacks unmissable, Aim True modifier turns Phlegmunculus into a reliable damage every single round. Both his melee and ranged attacks always hit increasing the chance of applying any hit-based ability you have with him. It’s a perfect modifier for him since missing even once can waste his some of the combos you can do with him. |

![]() Born Again |
All monsters on the board gains the Rebirth ability that revives them when they die once: The Poison Burst from Phlegmunculus triggers every time he dies, and Born Again gives him another chance to do it again. This means he can explode twice in one battle, spreading poison multiple times across different opponents. It makes him extremely dangerous for your opponents especially if they don't have any Cleanse and Cleanse Rearguard in their team. |

![]() Explosive Weaponry |
All monsters on the board gains the Blast ability that inflicts half the damage to the monsters beside the target: This modifier gives Blast to Phlegmunculus, letting both his melee and ranged attacks deal extra damage to nearby enemies. Because he can hit twice per round, it means two separate Blast hits every turn which adds up even if Phlegmunculus have low damage. If he dies even because of the opponent's blast, his Poison Burst activates, poisoning whoever killed him making his death just as deadly as his attacks. |

Blast: [Damage] When this monster attacks, monsters beside the target gets half of the damage. The nature of the damage is based on the attacking monster's attack type. Tips: Blast is a per hit ability. This means that since Phlegmunculus has two attacks, each attack, the melee and range, does different blast damage making it a really good ability for Phlegmunculus. |

True Strike: [Attack Modifier] This monster's attack cannot miss, regardless of the speed difference, rule of combat and abilities applied on the board. Tips: Phlegmunculus has very low speed at all levels which makes his attacks high risk to miss. True Strike solves this problem by making sure all attacks coming from this monster hits regardless of other's speed or abilities. |

Bloodlust: [Stat Modifier] [Positive Status] If this monster kills an opponent's monster, max health, max armor, attack damage, and speed increases by 1. Tips: Bloodlust increases all stats when this monster kill another. The good thing about this is because Phlegmunculus has two attacks, it also increase both of his attacks. |

Lineup

Nidhoggr
One of the best archon in the game reducing the opponent's health and armor by 1 with the cost of reducing the maximum monsters allowed in your team by 1. In addition to that, he gives Blast and Deathblow to up to 3 monsters or +2 Speed and Execute to up to 3 monsters.

Ulundin Overseer
I'm starting to like this monster more and more due to the insane protection he can provide. The high health and armor makes up for the lack of damage. The Flank ability is also good if you have melee units that do not have any way to attack from the back and are also squishy enough to not be a tank.

Phlegmunculus
Phlegmunculus is a good filler for Earth monsters. He only costs 2 mana and have both range and melee attack meaning he can deal up to 2 damage. Close Range allows him to use the range attack in the 1st position so he wouldn't lose damage. Monsters with Double Strike or multiple attack types are good with abilities such as Blast since these abilities proc per attack. This means that Phlegmunculus will do two blast attacks per round, one for melee and one for range attack.

Halaran Huntress
I don't have a reliable 4 mana Earth monster except for Halaran Huntress. The 2 melee damage and Charge ability are good combo but the health is left something to be desired.

Halfling Refugee
I actually put him in the wrong position. I wanted to show off Phlegmunculus in this battle so I place Phlegmunculus behind Ulundin Overseer being Ulundin Overseer the main tank. I should've put Halfling Refugee in 1st position in front of Ulundin Overseer since Halfling Refugee will not be as useful in longer rounds due to Weary.

The opponent focused their mana on Drybone Megalodon and Chaos Evoker which did not pay. The -1 health and -1 armor from Nidhoggr paid off huge allowing my monsters to just blast the backline away. Once Drybone Megalodon is the only one on the opponent's side, Deathblow kicks in making my monsters deal twice the damage to that last monster.

Phlegmunculus shines when paired with the right team and used in the right modifiers. His Poison Burst alone can swing battles while the double attack that Phlegmunculus have gives him multiple combos you can play around with. When used smartly, he’s the kind of unit that can be a game changer whether he is on the board or not.
Overall, Phlegmunculus is more than just a filler. He’s a disgusting, gross, tactical weapon for low mana battles with unique combos and battle strats. With the right synergies like Nidhoggr’s Blast or modifiers like Born Again, Phlegmunculus becomes a constant threat. Whether alive or not, this little blob ensures the fight never ends clean for the other side.
