WAFCON 2024 Groups

At the time of writing this article, it is just three days remaining to the kickoff of WAFCON 2024, where Morocco is hosting the tournament. This is a tournament I have been anticipating a lot. I enjoyed the showpiece of the last tournament, although my national team, The Super Falcons, did not live up to expectations—despite the fact that we've won the tournament up to nine times, making us the biggest title holders in the whole of Africa.

Let’s take a look at the groups.

---

GROUP A:

Morocco

Zambia

Senegal

DR Congo

In this group, Morocco being the host is expected to survive the group. Zambia, due to their last wonderful outcome, is also expected to come out of this group. I'm not writing off Senegal and DR Congo—they'll pose a big mountain for the favourites in this group.

GROUP B:

Nigeria

Tunisia

Algeria

Botswana

I hope I wouldn’t get attacked if I say that Nigeria has no issue topping this group? A few months ago, there was a friendly match between Nigeria and Algeria, and the Algerians were walloped. The other three teams will have a big battle for who follows Nigeria to qualify from this group. Botswana is no longer a small name in female football in Africa.

GROUP C:

South Africa

Ghana

Mali

Tanzania

South Africa is the current holder of the WAFCON title from the last tournament. They're going to do everything possible to qualify from this group and defend their title. Of course, they’re expected to qualify. Ghana is the next favourite to qualify from this group, but they need to work for it because the Malians and Tanzanians are not going to make it easy for them.

The tournament is kicking off this coming Saturday (5th July), and everyone is anticipating.
