A New Job (Zapfic)

Here's a zapfic that popped into my head today while thinking of a new character to write; I haven't really explored cybernetics and that kind of thing in the stories, but they have been eluded to.

I think the idea of enhancements is really interesting, and the body horror element to them.

Jaziac jumped with joy at the sight of the message.

"We're delighted to offer you the position at headtech."

It was a dream of his work with cybernetic enhancement, and this job would put his neuro-science degree to good use.

He felt a certain amount of moral bankruptcy, though.

Cyperpunk

I think something that the game did really well, was showcasing cybernetic enhancements in relation to a practice that is already well-known in our own world; piercings and tattoos.

Everyone seems to have, or have had one or the other, or at the very least died or bleached hair, which is all a form of enhancement. I had a bunch of piercings, but took them all out over the years and just never put them back in.

In the game, Cyberpunk 2077, there are people known as cyber-psychos. Who have become addicted to their enhancements, to the point that they are mostly machine. In the world of Cyberpunk, too many enhancements lead to something known as cyber-psychosis, which see's the person affected lose their mind and lash out erratically at anyone or anything; usually a special task force is sent to deal with these menaces, as the average person just wouldn't stand a chance. The anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners covered those types of stories really well.

I think as far as lore goes, the game built an amazing and grim world, which leaves the player wanting to lift every rock, even though some are better off not being lifted.

The cyberpunk aesthetic is amazing to me, and I try to incorporate the ideals of the genre in one of the worlds in my sci-fi stories I right. But, beneath the surface and neon lights is some really interesting ideas that can be explored. I don't think I would go as far as the Cyberpunk game did, while I would love to, I don't want cybernetic enhancements to be as readily available as they are in that franchise.
